Can't manage iPhone Apps with iTunes 9—all buttons/functions are disabled

I can't find a way to manage my Apps (reorder them, download the ones I bought on the phone to the computer, sync the ones I bought in the iTunes store to the iPhone, etc.) using iTunes 9 via the
Sidebar->Devices->iPhone->Applications
tab. All the buttons are grayed out and the reordering function is darkened (doesn't work).

What do I have to do to enable this iTunes feature again? Is it an iTunes 9 bug?

20" Aluminum iMac (Spring 2008): 2,66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.2), The iMac has 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. My 16 GB iPhone 3GS is running 3.1.2.

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!!! Posting in case anyone has the same issue:

1. right-click on "your name's iphone" under DEVICES in iTunes.
2. Choose TRANSFER PURCHASES. ta-da!!! This takes all the apps from your iphone and combines them with the ones in itunes.
3. Now, go ahead and sync them up.
4. Voila! Everything's un-grayed out and functioning.

phew!
