iTunes 9 has corrupted my iPod Classic

So here is my sorry story - please let me know if you have had similar symptoms and if you have found a solution.

I have a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard. I recently upgraded iTunes to iTunes version 9.0.2 and attempted to synchronise my iPod Classic (not sure which version I have - it's about 2 years old if that) whereby I was sent down all sorts of nonsense alleyways by Apple as iTunes told me that my iPod was corrupt and needed to be restored etc.

I have uninstalled every aspect of iTunes 9 from my mac and have installed iTunes 8 instead, as I didn't seem to have any problems with that before (lucky me? or better software?). I have verified and erased my iPod then restored it in iTunes.

I then thought perhaps I ought to manually manage my music as the auto-sync was what seemed to start this whole nightmare in the first place. This all goes well until I reach around 12GB when the iPod starts crunching and iTunes freezes to transfer. I am then unable to stop the transfer and unable to eject the iPod from Finder.

All that I can assume from this and from reading these discussion boards is that my iPod has been irreparably damaged by iTunes 9.

There are theories being expounded on these boards that this is all an elaborate ploy by Apple in order to capture the Christmas market - what more incentive do you need for a new shiny iPod than the fact your perfectly good one is not defunct? I'm not sure I buy into that as the negative publicity is surely more damaging than a few iPod sales. However this is massively negligent on Apple's part if iTunes is in fact the cause of all of this destruction.

Whilst the software licence agreement purports to exclude all liability for any damage caused by such software, in the UK this is overridden by the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which restrict the degree to which a company can exclude liability for loss caused and which imply a term into the contract which states that the goods must be of satisfactory quality. Whilst Apple could potentially have limited itself by clearly pointing out that the software is not suitable for iPod Classic owners they have not done this therefore to my mind there is a clear case for asking Apple to provide its now disillusioned and iPod-less customers with adequate compensation for their loss.

I am going to progress this with Apple and will post back here as to how I get on. Meanwhile, if any other UK customers would like to add anything please do as it seems that the voice of millions may be what Apple needs to do something about this.

I haven't been able to find anything earlier than itunes 8, other than pc versions of itunes 7. If anyone knows where I could find it, that would be great

When I connect to another mac, the ipod connects to itunes (not sure if it's 8 or 9). You may well be right about the firmware as I hadn't connected for around 3 months prior to D-Day. Do you know if the Apple Genius Bar is worth a try?

Thanks for your help - much appreciated!

After a great deal of time and frustration (my Classic initially crapped out on Christmas Day, this is what worked for me.
One caveat: it involved Drive Genius, which proved itself (yet again) as an invaluable utility. I highly recommend it.

I connected my Classic and made sure iTunes was closed beforehand.
I used Drive Genius to erase the iPod's HD. Apple's Disk Utility and even DG's "Repair" and "Initialize" utilities didn't even work.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 9
I connected my iPod and opened iTunes and allowed iTunes to Restore the iPod but NOT to automatically Sync it (iTunes>Preferences>Devices> check "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically).
I then chose to Sync independently of the "automatic" iTunes sync.
Everything finally works.

This is just worked for me after trying to restore my iPod 3 separate times...it was a last ditch effort.
Good Luck

TangleoFactor - But does this mean that you had to delete everything on your iPod??? I have the same problem as everyone else, and unfortunately my iPod is FILLED with music that I dont have availeble anywhere else - some invaluable things as own recordings etc (Im a musician) - and I would do anything to restore my iPod without having to delete whats on it already. It sounds like your option means deleting everything that is on the iPod?

Gregga, I tried this but when I got itunes 8 installed, it turned out my classic has the latest software, so that isn't the problem. Now that I made a new library for itunes, it is saying that it can't sync it because it has a different library. Then it tries to sync photos anyhow. Then it says it is deleting photos and that the file can't be found. I have no idea what is going on!

So Here is something interesting. iTunes 9 has also corrupted my brand new classic 160GB that I have only had for about a month. It Has worked great until this latest update. Here is where it gets wierd. I just update my old 80GB and it is working perfectly so why did my new one corrupt and not the old one? What is the flaw in the new program and when will it be fixed? I have tried all of their fixes in the Error message help site and nothing works. It first told me that my Ipod was empty and now it is telling me it is corrupted.

Chiara.s1,

You need to create a new library. On Mac, quit iTunes, then re-open it with an option-click (just one click!) and you will get a window with "Choose iTunes Library". Choose "create new library" and give it a name. That will get you started. From that point, you can either add your current music files to your new library (it will only reference your music; not duplicate it) and stick with iTunes 8, or update your firmware and try iTunes 9 again.

I finally got my iPod to work after endless hours of frustration. I downgraded to iTunes 8.2, but got the message "The file iTunes library. itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." I tried to create a new library (with the alt button, etc) but couldn't get it to work. So, I went under My Documents, My Music, iTunes, and deleted the iTunes Library.itl file that was there. After this, iTunes was able to run; then I simply added all my old music files back onto iTunes, and connected my iPod, which was now recognized. I had to resync my whole previous library back onto my iPod, but luckily I had all my files and didn't lose anything.

Are you on a Mac or on a windows machine?

If you are on windows, I would suggest reinstalling the Apple Mobile Device Driver. I don't think the older classics need it to work while the newer ones do - which would explain why your old iPod works and the new one does not.

Here is a link that lays out how to uninstall and reinstall all the various windows stuff:

Or maybe try just restarting it first:

@martin.pianist.
Yes, this did delete everything on my ipod. However, there is this amazing little program, Senuti: http://www.fadingred.com/senuti
That should help you out.
You can also use Drive Genius 2's "Duplicate" function to make a copy of your iPod's HD. Again, you have to buy another program but that software has more than paid for itself.
An update on my iPod situation:
After connecting my iPod 2 more times, I encountered the same problem. Finally, I used "Gregga34"'s solution on the first page of this thread. It has worked great since. Gotta love those Kiwis
