iTunes 9 has corrupted my iPod Classic

So here is my sorry story - please let me know if you have had similar symptoms and if you have found a solution.

I have a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard. I recently upgraded iTunes to iTunes version 9.0.2 and attempted to synchronise my iPod Classic (not sure which version I have - it's about 2 years old if that) whereby I was sent down all sorts of nonsense alleyways by Apple as iTunes told me that my iPod was corrupt and needed to be restored etc.

I have uninstalled every aspect of iTunes 9 from my mac and have installed iTunes 8 instead, as I didn't seem to have any problems with that before (lucky me? or better software?). I have verified and erased my iPod then restored it in iTunes.

I then thought perhaps I ought to manually manage my music as the auto-sync was what seemed to start this whole nightmare in the first place. This all goes well until I reach around 12GB when the iPod starts crunching and iTunes freezes to transfer. I am then unable to stop the transfer and unable to eject the iPod from Finder.

All that I can assume from this and from reading these discussion boards is that my iPod has been irreparably damaged by iTunes 9.

There are theories being expounded on these boards that this is all an elaborate ploy by Apple in order to capture the Christmas market - what more incentive do you need for a new shiny iPod than the fact your perfectly good one is not defunct? I'm not sure I buy into that as the negative publicity is surely more damaging than a few iPod sales. However this is massively negligent on Apple's part if iTunes is in fact the cause of all of this destruction.

Whilst the software licence agreement purports to exclude all liability for any damage caused by such software, in the UK this is overridden by the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which restrict the degree to which a company can exclude liability for loss caused and which imply a term into the contract which states that the goods must be of satisfactory quality. Whilst Apple could potentially have limited itself by clearly pointing out that the software is not suitable for iPod Classic owners they have not done this therefore to my mind there is a clear case for asking Apple to provide its now disillusioned and iPod-less customers with adequate compensation for their loss.

I am going to progress this with Apple and will post back here as to how I get on. Meanwhile, if any other UK customers would like to add anything please do as it seems that the voice of millions may be what Apple needs to do something about this.

One near universal solution: Restore the iPod and uninstall iTunes.

For Mac computers:

1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete or more, depending on your iPod capacity.

I am in the process of erasing the iPod right now. I have a 80 gb iPod classic and I encountered similar problems after updated iTunes the other day. I'll see if it works, but this is good info either way.

Whew! iTunes wouldn't see it, Finder wouldn't. My venerable 40GB 4th Gen. iPod displayed
the iPod support URL on the screen but wouldn't mount. First Aid said the drive was damaged
and irreparable. Fumbled it into Disk Mode, Disk Utility now offered partition, erase and
format options. Clueless, I selected Journaled and the standard erase, which took all of a couple
seconds. Disk Verify reported "the drive is OK, no repairs needed." iTunes now proceeded with
a normal sync, which re-wrote all my music, etc. as the iTunes 9 error resulted in erasure
of everything but the firmware. No restore was required, all is well.
Why am I afraid to re-connect it?

Okay,

This thread has all sorts of fires that needs to be put out, but I've found an unorthodox solution to the syncing problem with itunes freezing and the ipod 160 classic. It's kind of a pain... but this works for me and I wanted to share with people who still want music on their precious ipod classic...

So, when your unhappy ipod is syncing with itunes automatically, first thing you need to do is RESTORE it. Then when it boots up again, be sure you check the "Manually Manage Music" tab. Afterwards, just drag and drop a few artists / playlists at a time to sync to your ipod. For some reason this works and the ipod isn't overloaded with music to sync with. Be careful though, if you add a ton of songs it freezes again and the songs won't sync.

Has anyone had any luck in reverting to itunes 9.1.0?? I was thinking of trying that.

I don't know how often people post here, but if some soul out there finds this message and wants to chat about finding a solution (I find collaboratively is the best way of thinking) let me know.

Its ridiculous, from other posts ive read it seems this problem of iTunes 9 corrupting iPod classics has been going on since Sept 09 and Apple dont seem to doing a thing about it ive tried formatting, quick formatting, uninstalling iTunes, reinstalling iTunes, recovering the iPod, boot mode etc etc etc and nothing works i get just under 10gb of stuff on there and then it corrupts the lot crashes and wipes it.
Until id read these pages i thought it was something id done and was gonna buy a new iPod but due to Apples lack of support for its customers as a fix for this doesnt seem to be coming i doubt ill buy an iPod/pad/touch again.

Jayrizzle,
I completely agree with you. Apple could not care less about this.As a result of itunes 9, I have I can only use my 120Gb ipod with ! more computer. I used up one life on an old laptop with a small hard disc, I used a second when I transferred my library to an external hard drive (so my laptop would run faster) and finally a third when I bought this one. The duff version of Itunes used up the 4th.
Of course getting through to Apple to get this sorted will cost me.
Like you I will NEVER consider another Apple product, they are just too tied up in profit seeking and legal red tape.

I am going to spend time when its raining to loading all my CD's onto Windows Music player and be done with it, there are plenty of other MP3 players that are more user friendly, and less hassle to use.

This just happened to be last night, only I've had 9 on my computer for a while and used it before without problems. My 30GB iPod, which I've had for five years with no problems, is now permantly stuck on the menu screen with the battery reading charging after I plugged it in to update some songs. Now, whenever I try it it just tells me that the device has malfunctioned. It won't work on any computer I try it on.

From what I've gathered here, the solution seems to be to delete 9, install 8, and then try it?

This just started happening to mine the other day when it updated to 9.1 or whatever. Before that it would connect right away and be flawless. After the update i went to connect it and it didn't instantly connect like usual, and 5 minutes went by, noticing my itunes and computer froze up. Restarted. Tried again. Everything froze up again... I got it to connect once but haven't had that luck since... I can connect it to my computer and it will charge and my computer will see it, but itunes will not. Have reverted back to itunes 8... no luck, updated to the latest 9.2 still no luck, doesn't freeze, but doesn't connect either.

Have tried every option apple has posted and notta.

Hi all, I heard all these problems, I have found a solution.
The issue is not with the syncing of the ipod in general but specifically with syncuing of music, as contacts and pictures will sync if done first.

PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS INFORMATION AND READ THE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. PLEASE FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE EVEN IF YOU ARE RUNNING 32BIT OR 64 BIT VERSIONS OF WINDOWS VISTA AND WINDOWS 7. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WILL WORK ON XP.

I have a windows 7 64-bit machine, and using iTunes 9.2.0.61. I also have organized my library

(Go to itunes, file, library, organize library, upgrade to itunes media organization, this under your itunes folder, splits the folder into videos, music, apps, etc)

if you decide to do the above make sure you do NOT connect ipod until its complete similar to updating your genius mix.

I normally automically sync the following:

Contacts with Microsoft Outlook 2003 (refuse to pay stupid money just for the 2010 edition of this)
Photos (i choose the folders though)
videos (currently dont have any)
music (dont select music videos as never download them).

SOLUTION - FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!

Go to your itunes music folder and delete any files labelled "temp.tmp or temp 1.tmp, temp 2.tmp" etc.

Uninstall the following:

1.iTunes
2.Apple Software Update
3.Apple Mobile Device Support
4.Bonjour
5.Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Connect your ipod before restarting the pc/laptop. Go to my computer and locate your ipod and right click and click format and make sure the quick format box is ticked.

If your ipod does not show then you can make it show by putting it in disk mode.. follow the following article and does work if done correctly and applies to all up to day ipods with click wheels (most recent is the 160gb ipod classic)
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363

Disconnect ipod.
Restart computer/laptop
Download and reinstall itunes.
The itunes page will automically recognise if you need itunes 64 bit or itunes 32 bit. Most windows 7 users will get the itunes 64 bit.
Install everything as normal
Restart computer/laptop.
Click itunes to load it up and if neccassary accepot the licence agreement.
Connect your ipod. A message should show up saying that your ipod will need restoring. Click ok to confirm the message.
Click your ipod on the left hand pane, and only the restore button should be lit.
Click restore and click confirm (a file will automically download and then automically open) so just wait for your ipod to be restored automatically to the most updated ipod software version.

Once complete, untick automitcally sync music.

Now the moment of truth.

Click your ipod on left had pane. Then starting from the tabs on the right side, click if you want to sync anything from there.
The first would be games, so click the games tab and then tick sync games and the ones you wish to sync if any, and then click sync on the lower left side of the window. This will work.

Proceed to do the same to the others, going to contacts, photos, books, SKIP ITUNES U, podcasts, tv programmes and finally films.

These should work without a problem. If the sync icon shows but freezes do not click or anything, just wait a maximum of 5 minutes. If it does not then work, using task manager close down itunes, and restart this process. If it does work immediately or within 5 minutes your almost there.
DO NOT CLICK THE MUSIC TAB WHATSOEVER UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.
Finally for the music.

Go to the summary tab (click your ipod on left hand pane, and then the summary tab at top).

UNTICK the manually manage and videos. A prompt will pop up stating it will erase and sync everything in your currently library click YES.

NOW WAIT, do not move anything, or click or touch. It will doe one of three things

1. Immediately sync - you should see at the top bar how many songs have synced out of your total e.g updating files on joe blog ipod, copying 345 of 1456 (current song name) and you should see the blue increasing in your capacity bar at the bottom of the window.

2. Freeze, but within 5 minutes sync – you’ll see the sync icon but it wont be moving in a clockwise direction and frozen. WAIT UP TO 5 MINUTES. If it works within 5 minutes you should see at the top bar how many songs have synced out of your total e.g updating files on joe blog ipod, copying 345 of 1456 (current song name) and you should see the blue increasing in your capacity bar at the bottom of the window.

3. Completely freezes and you have waited 5 minutes – if after 5 minutes it does not do the above then considered it failed and restart this entire procedure again, following step by step.

This procedure took me twice on a mates ipod and once on my own. Set yourself a good 2 hours aside meaning that you need to be patient and keep an eye on it. Do not use any other applications, and only use the internet for simple pages like this forum or basic text and images, no youtube etc.

I hope this has helped all of you and appreciate feedback as to if it has worked for you and if so how many attempts it has taken.

Count me as yet another victim of iTunes 9. My 2 year old 120gb iPod classic got toasted about a week ago when I was trying to sync some music. Had no problems for the prior 2 years with it, none. Tried restoring it several times but always got the same 'corrupted' message. Went to an Apple store and was told the hard drive is done and have to completely replace the unit. I wouldn't have a problem with that if I had a spare $250 lying around for a new classic. Ugh.

When a hard drive is corrupted it doesn't mean the actually hardware is broken. By following my instructions in my earlier post ul come to a part where ul format it independantly of iTunes meaning the hard drive is wiped from everything and every corrupted file so it is literally blank so try it and see. Apple will give u most expensive option to make money. Try my solution
