Uneven illumination

My powerbook was delivered on 24th Oct and no white spots (yet). The screen was perfect up until yesterday when I noticed a general unevenness of illumination.

The bottom corners of the screen now appear brighter and a darker patch hangs over the middle of the dock and extends about 1/3 of the way up the screen.

It's not blindingly obvious but very annoying to me, I'm just concerned it might be described as falling within normal parameters if I send the computer back.

Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

To all of you with illumination issues—can anyone post a photo of your screen? Mine is definitely not evenly lit, but it's very hard to see without a black background...on white it's impossible to tell.

Also, my the degree of unevenness in the screen appears to vary depending on the AlBook's temperature, i.e. it gets worse at higher temperatures.

Tyson, I'd post a photo if I could, but I don't have a digital camera so I'll have to stick to descriptions.
On a pure white background the right-hand side drops out about five steps on the brightness scale, and it's just as obvious with darker colours. It's less obvious when the brightness is jacked right up, but as soon as I go on battery power it drops out again - so much so it's hard to look at.
Mine has actually started to do the same on the left-hand side as well, but that's only obvious on a completely black screen.
The bottom corners of the screen are always darker.

I really don't think that this is within acceptable margins.

Apple told me to call my reseller, and my reseller told me to call Apple. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow...

I believe I may have this problem also.

It only became apparent to me when i restarted the PBook installing the new battery update.

On the grey start up screen with about medium brightness it was clearly visible that the right hand side of the screen was a shade darker than the left.

However, once the desktop booted up, and the machine had warmed up a little, i found it much harder to tell the uneven illumination, it can best be explained as the right corners look a little 'dirty'. If the turnaround time is quite good in the UK (any experience anyone?) then I'll ring support and see what they say.

Anyone had this problem and found it to non-recur after a fix?

I think my screen had this kind of sickness too. it's barely noticeable but it's just enough anoying.I noticed it 2 week ago but i wasn't sure it wasn't my eye.

Mine only shows when i work in low brightness condition and misteriously disapear when you put it in full brightness (slowly disapear in about 30 seconds)

I'll finish my session tomorow and i will call apple after my last exam.

if you want screenshot from the screen here it is

you can barely see it it on the picture it's a darker spot near bottom right center of the screen ... in the worst case i think the darken spot take about 1/3->1/2 of the screen with more accentuate effect where you can see the spot right now.

I noticed my lcd is a little dark in the bottom corners. is this normal? it looks like its dirty but its not. i tried to use the keyboard duster to get the corners but its still the same. with the brightness set lower i can see it more but when its at its brightest it seems fine. what other ways can I tell that its uneven because other than that the PB is fine.

hmmm i have the same problem, this morning the illumination was so unevent like half the screen is dead. Had to turn up the brightness all the way up, wait about 30 seconds, then it's ok again.

I already have a case number for white spot, but i was thinking of not sending if it's doesnt get worst. Now i am thinking of sending, problem is i am in the middle of project now.

Anybody knows how long will it take apple to do the replacement in europe?

Dec 24, 2003 5:15 PM in response to Phill Ashworth

I have the same problem, and just called Apple today to schedule a repair. Now my problem is a bit different... The uneven illumination happens only after it has been running for a few minutes; the screen is perfect on bootup and when wakened from sleep. I am worrying now that a new screen might not solve the problem long term. I hope this is not like the white spot issue, where they would often come back after a replacement. I am going to miss my machine while it is gone, I love it other than this slight flaw.
