Error codes -6999, -48, iphone won't sync!

Hello!
I'm new to this forum, having been an ipod owner for many years with no probs whatsoever, I've never really needed to ask any questions before (and I certainly don't know enough to answer any!)

I'm a very lucky girl and was bought an iphone 3GS for my birthday. However.... it absolutely will not sync. I have the latest itunes which will sync perfectly with my ipod original 30GB. It absolutely refuses to sync the iphone 😟

Error codes -6999 and -48 show up after the message telling me that it won't sync because the folder can't be found. Apple support has no suggestions/solutions and all itunes suggests is resetting the iphone (which I've done now, 3 times). I've been through previous discussions on here that suggest switching off firewall. Tried it, nothing. Tried reinstalling itunes, nothing. Tried checking the iphone as a disk for errors, nothing.

Anyone got any ideas? Or am I right in thinking that taking it back to the store in the morning with a sad face could be the only way forward?

Thank you all in advance!

Hi Katy I have the same problem but I get errors when I synch applications downloaded from iTunes, it seems to be an incompatibility problem between iTunes and Windows 7 (that's sure), so far there is no solution for this issue yet, but I've tried syncing my iPhone 3GS in Windows XP and works perfectly and doesn't give me any errors or problems. Try syncing your iPhone to another PC with Windows XP and the lastest iTunes installed.

Try turning on compatibility mode.

I had a similar issue on Win7 Ultimate, but I'm on a custom built machine. Navigate to the installation path of iTunes through your C:\ Drive.

When you find the iTunes icon, right-click and go to Properties. On the compatability tab check off Run this Program in Compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3, and turn on Run as Administrator.

You can reboot if you like, but a simple "Right-Click, Run as Admin" on the icon should work.

Fixed it for me atleast, but I don't do the OEM scene...

I receive same error code (-6999) when attempting to sync my iPod Touch (32 GB, 3rd Gen).

I have an brand new i7 Core PC running Windows 7 64-Bit. (I see a few others also have the same i7 Core, could it be something with the chipset?)

My girlfriend's iPod Nano sync's fine with Windows 7, and it even recognizes it in "devices and printers". Works perfectly in iTunes as well.

My iPod Touch however does not sync properly. Windows only recognizes it as an "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver", iTunes attempts to either restore the iPod or set as new, and restoring doesn't work so I set as new. Going through with the syncing from there, more often then not my capacity at the bottom of the iTunes info window will show my iPod Touch has turned into a 4GB one. Trying to drop music onto the iPod has only worked once after trying several times. My iPod has also been a little screwy after these attempted syncs, as all my downloaded apps will quickly open and close (I assume its because of these half syncs).

Should I bother calling Apple Support? Wait for a Windows 7 fix? Help!?

I know it's not a issue with anti-virus or other software running in the background. After my fresh install I don't have anything else but iTunes 9.0.2. I've updated Windows 7 with all the latest updates. I do have the Intel i7 and I'm starting to wonder if it's the Intel PM55 Express Chipset because the error usually has something to do with not being able to read or find the file--indicative of a USB problem.

No matter what I do iTunes keeps saying the iPhone needs to be restored. I restore it and then I get the screen to set it up. I don't have Outlook or pictures or anything else that people might think are a problem. When I click "Done" iTunes freezes for 5 minutes and eventually gives the error 6999 or 48. In fact, at the point iTunes thinks my 8GB iPhone is a 4GB.

I updated the BIOS yesterday to the latest and it didn't make any difference. The drivers for the P55 chipset are the latest from Intel. There are various options in the BIOS for USB but I'm not sure if any should be changed from default. They read as follows:

USB Emulation: [Enabled]
External USB Ports: [Enabled]
USB Powershare: [Enabled]
USB Wake Support: [Disabled]

Any ideas?

Oh, and this is BIOS version A03 for the Dell Studio 1747.

Okay it does look like it's an Intel P55 chipset issue that Dell is refusing to address. HP, Gateway, and others have released BIOS update that fix the problem but Dell tech support says, "We don't have any plans to address the issue." In fact, Dell's solution is for me to return the unit and go somewhere else. If anyone wants to successfully sync their iPhone or iPod to their laptop, don't buy a Dell with the P55 chipset!

Same problems with homebuilt P55, i7, Win 7 64. This is a new machine for me and I can still sync to my old Vista 32 bit machine, so I know the variables that differ include the hardware, Win 7 64, and iTunes 64. (But at least I know it's not the phone!)

Some more clues for those of us with the problem...

1) I've seen the -6999 error
2) I've seen "the device timed out" error
3) I've seen the "file could not be found" error
4) I've seen "unknown error -50"

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but I could get everything to sync except photos (even trying to sync one photo would fail).

My motherboard is the Intel version (DP55KG). No BIOS updates available from Intel website.

Biggest help so far (thanks to one Apple phone tech who seemed to have more experience than everyone else I've spoken with) was to try different USB ports. This got me somewhere. My motherboard has 8 USB ports soldered on the back (these are the ones that stick out the back of the case). On the front of the motherboard, there are pin connectors for USB1 and USB2 which I wired up to jacks on the front of the case (like many commercial PCs have).

Here's my big breakthrough today...

Simply connecting the iPhone to one of the USB ports in the front of the case made all my problems go away! For those of you still struggling with this issue, try your front USB connectors.

Now, I haven't tried all the USB connectors in the back yet. If your motherboard is like mine, the USBs in the back are separated into different groups (in my case a group of 4, and two groups of 2). I've only tried the USBs in the back that are in the group of 4 (all of these work normally for other devices, but fail to sync my iPhone). I'll try the other groups and see if it makes a difference, but I was so pleased that I got the sync to work with the front USBs that I thought I'd let everyone know ASAP.

I hope this helps someone else too!

Update on my situation. I found new drivers on the Intel website for the P55 chipset thanks to this thread: http://communities.intel.com/thread/8781;jsessionid=863CABC0D3B8BF75123E8A3141F1 E46C.node5COMS?start=30&tstart=4

The driver update went well, but did not solve the sync issue using the USB jacks in the back of the computer. The 8 jacks soildered to the motherboard don't allow sync'ing, but the 2 on the front still do (these are the USB connectors wired to the USB1/USB2 connectors on the motherboard).

Someone smarter than I needs to explain what's going on.

I'm still pleased I can sync -- just wish I could use the USB jacks a really want to use.

If you are having this problem, try your USB jacks located on front of your computer and post your results...

I've tried updating the chipset files from Intel, I've tried disabling Bonjour and removing the XML file, I've tried reinstalling iTunes and even Windows 7. I've tried all three of my USB ports and I keep having the same syncing error (-6999) and eventually the -48 error. I've updated my BIOS on my Dell 1747. I don't know what else to do. My iPhone 3G simply will not sync with my laptop. Anyone else having this same problem? Any more ideas?

I'm not sure this is necessarily a p55 chipset issue - I have a self-built AMD based machine with Windows 7 x64 and an ASUS AMD 790GX based motherboard. I am encountering the time out errors as well as the bad drive errors. I've tried all things mentioned in the various discussions about this across several websites to no avail (including updating BIOS, and compatibility mode).

Error codes -6999, -48, iphone won't sync!
