my iPod classic doesnt show up on iTunes

I have no idea what to do. my Ipod was fine until I got iTunes 9. my Ipod registers on my computer, but not on iTunes. I've tried resetting my ipod, system restore on my computer, even downloaded iTunes all over again. I finally gave up and and tried to restore my iPod all together, but it doesn't show up on my iTunes sources. I'm thinking maybe the iPod's system version is out of date, but I can't download a new one when my itunes can't see it. If anyone knows how to fix it, I'd appreciate if you could help!

Thanks dealmaker,

You have solved my problem, I did as you suggested and installed version 8 on another computer which synced my ipod straight away and automatically updated it from version 1.0 to 1.3.2, then attached it to my laptop and it synced straight away to version 9. Thank God for this Discussion Forum so that we can share our problems and solutions. Thanks again.

Im having the same problem! I just updated my dell os to windows 7 and now my 80 gig classic wont get recognized by itunes or in my computer! I also have a mac book pro for school so i tried plugging it into that just to make sure it wasnt the ipod itself. it connects fine on the mac and itunes recognizes it right away. i spend ALL afternoon on the phone with apple and i got NO results!
Im starting to think that this is a problem with windows 7? PLEASE HELP!

How did you get your iPod to update to the latest firmware (1.3.2 or whatever)? I have a 120 Gb Classic, and on the many attempts I have made to restore it, I still end up with 1.0.2, and if I manually ask for updates, it assures me that 1.0.2 is the latest version.

Since others seem to have solved their problems by doing this, I'm very keen to do the same - but maybe firmware updates which fix the problem are only available for some models?

I'm having the same problem!!!! I upgraded to itunes 9. i have the classic 30gb that's 3.5 years old. i've NEVER had a problem. now it shows up on my desktop and is connected, but it doesn't come up in itunes. i don't want to restore my ipod because i'll lose a lot of my music (i dont have it all on my computer cause my hard drive crashed a couple years ago)

I hope something can be done to fix this problem.

"Yes, you will need to re-import your library, and you need to delete the .itl library file from your iTunes music folder. But then your pods will work fine again."

Does this mean I will lose my music? I don't know where my music is or how to locate all the files to move them to my desktop so that i do not lose all my music.

and, will the music on my ipod, that's NOT in my itunes, stay on my ipod??

Thanksf or your help.

This is definitley an Apple software issue - nothing to do with which OS you are running. I have been using XP on the same PC for sveral years - these problems only ocurred recently - and after an iTunes "upgrade" - I have jsut tried to sync an older 80GB iPod we have an failed - and my ealrier "trick" of using an old laptop to download a version of iTunes V8 - does not now seem to work???? Thus renedering the iPod useless - (it wiped it when I syncd with the "new" library) strangely it says that v 1.3 is the lates softare for this particualr iPod - when I'm sure it shoudl eb v 1.3.2 - it seems very strange that thsi has happened!

ARE APPLE consciously creating this problem to render all older iPods useless - so we all need to upgrade to newe iTouch's etc??

APPLE - we should be told - what the **** is going on with this problem??

Like everyone else had this problem. Called Apple and paid $30 for them to reinstall iTunes 9 and still not work. In that the case has a 30 day clock, I took it to Apple store and they used a Mac on this Classic which was PC formated and came up with sorry but the section on hard drive that takes upgraded firmware could not be write to. That does not compute in my mind. Told daughter I will use an old PC laptop which had iTunes 8 and did not want upgrade to iTunes 9.

iTunes 8 saw her Classic and asked if I wanted to upgrade the firmware for PC from 1.0 to 1.1.2? and I said yes. All complete, connected to her PC with iTunes 9 and all is well.

Hope this helps folks. Apple still got the best game in town, just needs to get a fix explanation out there for all to see.

I think dealmaker has it right, I have 2 ipod classic's, the older 30GB is running software version 1.3 and sync's perfectly with itunes 9. I have a new 80gb classic that has never been sync'ed, and is runnig software version 1.0 and will not be recognized in itunes 9 no matter what, (and I have tried everything). Windows has no problem recognizing my 80gb as an ipod. I cannot roll back to itues 8, so I am going to take my 80gb to the Apple Store and ask them to update my software to 1.3. It will be on a MAC, but that is easily changed when I get back on by Dell.

ive had the same exact problem with my 80gig classic. the "outdated ipod software" idea makes sense but without the ability for my itunes to read the ipod, i cant update it. my only difference is that prior to DL'ing 9.0, i had a similar problem where it would show in the list but i couldnt access it due to it being locked. i had assumed that this was simply because i needed an updated itunes to fix it. obviously it didnt. anyone else bothered by the fact that apple doesnt seem to be paying any attention to these kinds of posts?
