I can't download ANYTHING!

Please help, I just upgraded to Snow Leopard (from leopard 10.5.8) this afternoon and now i cannot download anything with either safari or firefox. I can surf the web just fine, but I can't download .dmg, or .doc or anything. When I try it sends me to a blank (dark grey) screen and the download timesout. Nothing is sent to my download file. I would uninstall safari and try a reinstall, but I wouldn't be able to download the installation software. Any suggestions are very welcome 🙂

The problem with Speed Download (and some other internet enhancers) is that IF a person
installs it, come up on the payment deadline and decides not to use it, they cannot download
anything. Yazsoft is great about sending people the uninstaller, in case the user just trashed
the SD folder (with the uninstaller).

I had the very same problem with snow leopard and solved it but my bigger problem at the moment is I don't recall for sure how I solved it.

But for starters, instead of downloading by clicking on a link in Safari try right clicking on that link. Then select Download linked file as... and this will get your file you want.

I have always used "iGetter" which is a very good download manager when I used 10.5.8. It finally came out with a version that works with 10.6.x which I now use. It has a preference within it to tell Safari and FireFox and whatever else to use iGetter as the download manager. I now use it and I no longer have to right click on a link to download it. I just click and it downloads it and I must say, faster than Safari's own download manager and it can be stopped and started at any time without losing anything it has already downloaded. It is will worth the bucks, and for that matter has an unlimited free trial period.

One last thing to try is to run Safari in 32-bit mode. Not an elegant solution but it may lead you to a solution as that can of thing often does.
