I layer scores and run out of processor all the time. I use exs24 a lot which is doing it, can someone point me in the right direction? I thinking I'm missing the terminology of it, freezing the tracks does not work.

You should upgrade your Mac Performa 400 to a more powerful computer. EXS is as light on the processor as it gets, short of an external sampler, so a current computer will handle it adequately. Notes that are not being played don't take CPU, so there's no point in disabling them.

If freezing the track doesn't work, then the track isn't the problem. Do you do green or blue freezes? And do you have plugins inserted? As Christian said, the EXS24 is one of the more processorfriendly Instruments. How many do you use? And what Mac do you use? What OS?
Considering I have a 2.8 intel core 2 duo mac pro with 8 gigs of ram, and have spoken with 3 people at apple about this, one being on the logic team, I believe my question to be accurate. Maybe I should specify that I'm running 20-60 EXS24 instruments. the EXS has to load all those samples to play them, so obviously that takes some processing power. You probably haven't run into this with your 8core mac pro, maybe you have if you do film work since that is what I do, well, video games, but I layer lot of instruments and have run into this issue. Unfortunately the EXS24 isn't able to use the Logic Node because it has to load those samples I was referring to on the host computer.
So, anyone have any advise besides updating my computer?

Aha.
I'm doing film scores with up to 120 tracks with EXS.
Turn on Virtual Memory in your EXS and read up about it in the manual.

If freezing doesn't help then you don't have a CPU issue. You need a faster drive. Your problem Sounds like either out of RAM issues or hard drive access speed--not so much CPU. Exs is very processor light. But the drive can bog down. Like you and CO, I do scores with dozens of tracks and exs is always the least of my problems with virtual memory set correctly.
Also make sure you use a separate drive for your samples like a velociraptor, and don't check the box for putting samples in the project folder until you are ready to archive the project after it's done.

Still happening. Skips, jumps, cpu maxed. Running Logic on seperate 7200 drive, library on 7200 drive, project on 7200 drive, all firewire external drives, 6gb of ram, logic only supports 4gb so no reason to upgrade unless I'm missing something. Going to buy a mac pro but need to figure out another issue first, any suggestions in the mean time?
Virtual Memory is on ? And yes, Logic with EXS can utilize more than 4gb, so your 6Gb are not wasted.
However, you should not get a CPU maxed errors unless you're piling up insane amounts of Space Designers on a live input.
How many voices in total are you trying to play ?

I believe the issue is, I am using a 5.1 surround patch with a 4 effects on top of it. This one track seems to be to much when played with the other 22 tracks it doesn't work correctly and pops up with the CPU maxed pop up.
Disable notes not being played to make EXS24 less processor Heavy?
