PowerPoint Crashing When Printing

Hello all. Hope someone can help me asap.

I have a Canon colour copier with a Fiery. I am trying to print some slides from PowerPoint but as soon as I select to print, PowerPoint crashes. I cannot create PDF's either. Within a couple of seconds of the print window appearing, I get a Microsoft Error Reporting window and the option to recover my work and restart PowerPoint.

If I change the printer to a different Canon that is only B&W, I can print! No crash. But I need to print the slides in colour.

I am using version 12.2.3 of PowerPoint.

Help please!

Hello Pahu. I was hoping you were still online.

We have a Canon iR C3580. I am not sure what Fiery it is. It is white metal box hanging on the back of the copier.

I thought the problem may have been with the file I am trying to print. But I just now tried to print one of the sample files included in the Project Gallery and I get the same crash.

Let me know if you need any other information.

Hi Dave,

Well it appears there is something within the imagePASS Mac drivers that PowerPoint doesn't like.

I did as you suggested and opened one of the template PPT files within Project Gallery. When I selected to print, I had no immediate crash, but then I did have a different model of Canon printer set as the default. Within a couple of seconds of changing to the H1, the print dialog closed before I could click Print and the error pane appeared.

I opened PPT and the file again and selected to print, this time leaving the Canon board driver as the printer. No crash and I was able to print.

I then tried to print again and as soon as I selected the H1 I pressed the print button. PPT crashed again but the job did manage to get to the copier and print.

My next test was to use the Canon board PPD to print to the H1. This did not cause PPT to crash and the 6 slides printed, albeit the colours were a bit softer compared to the same print I did manage to get using the H1 driver.

So, since you need to get your job printed quickly, I suggest you download and install the Canon PPDs. Then you can create a new printer queue, using the same queue information you are using now to the J1 but by selecting the 'Canon iR C3080/3480/3580' in the Print Using menu.

Thanks for your help Pahu. The PPD is working well. The colours are okay and the job is printing without PowerPoint crashing, so that is the main thing. The only issue is that the border appears to be uneven, ie the image is closer to one edge than the other. Not a show stopper for me at this late hour. I'm printing this file regardless. But if you do manage to come up with a better solution I would love to hear from you.

Merry Xmas and thanks again for your help.

Hi Dave,

Regarding the borders, I noticed a similar result with the Canon PPDs. But I have found a solution to printing from PPT using the imagePASS driver without a crash.

For some reason the crash only occurs when you have the LPD queue set to print. After creating a new LPD queue set to direct or hold, the crash did not occur. I also found that the crash occurred when using HP Jetdirect for the protocol. But this was due to the queue being bound to the print queue in the imagePASS. After changing this to hold or print, I was also able to print without crashing.

So it leaves me to believe that when there is some level of bidirectional communication, such as when you use the print queue, the crash occurs due to something in the imagePASS driver clashing with PPT.

We don't use PPT that often and when we do we always use the hold queue, so that we can change print properties, proof and reprint via Command Workstation when needed.

Anyway, I suggest you create the printer queue again to the J1, this time selecting LPD for the protocol and setting a queue name of direct (make sure you enter the queue name in lower case). This will print your job but will not save the job on the hard drive of the imagePASS. This may not be an issue for you but if it is you could print to the hold queue and then use Command Workstation to print the job. Note that you can download CWS from the imagePASS via its internal web page.

I also suggest you give Canon a call and let them know of your issue. They may have a fix that I am not aware of?

Have a good Christmas Dave and a prosperous 2010.

Pahu, once again you are a bloody genius! I had already printed my booklets but I still created a new printer to the direct queue and it worked perfectly with no crashes!!! Many, many thanks.

Regarding the call to Canon, I had already tried calling them but I got transferred to their Tech Support and they didn't answer. Probably at Xmas lunch???

Once again thankyou. You deserve more than the points I can give you...
