iPhone Remote does not work with Actiontec PK5000 router

I have DSL through Qwest. I have an iPhone 3G and a laptop with iTunes all on the same wireless network. My old router broke (don't remember the model) and since then I have not been able to use my iPhone Remote to control iTunes. The iPhone Remote works to control iTunes on the laptop when I'm connected to any other wireless network, so I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the new Actiontec PK5000 router that I got when the old one broke down.

Since it works on other networks, I'm sure that all necessary ports are open through the Windows Firewall on my laptop. As far as I can tell, there should be no packet filtering happening on the router between devices on the wireless network, but something has to be blocking it...

Has anyone had any success with this specific combination (iPhone 3G, fully updated, Laptop running windows 7 and an Actiontec PK5000 router)? Any suggestions what to look at to try and solve this?

Thanks,
Ryan

I have the same problem apple tv wont sync in itunes on my actiontec q1000 modem.. I found out the reason why after extensive research on the problem. All actiontec modems do not support impg protocol-- or Internet Group Management Protocol aka multicast. Apples term for it is Bonjour. Without this apples devices on these stupid modems will not connect. Here is a quote from the Q1000 Data sheet

Advanced Features
DHCP Server Option
DHCP Server/PPPoE Server Auto Detection
DNS Server
Full Bridge Device Control
LAN IP & WAN IP Address Selection
MAC Address Cloning
Port Forwarding, Port Triggering
PPPoE Support
IGMP v1, v2, v3 (available soon)
MAC Address Filtering
IGMP proxy and snooping

Note the "IGMP v1, v2, v3 (available soon)" in that list, this is bonjour, to this day it is still not implemented on qwest actiontec modems. I have the latest version of firmware and its not there.
My 2 wire dsl modem has a multicast option to turn it on the actiontec does not. My final solution for this was to buy an apple airport extreme n router and forget using the actiontec for anything but an internet connection.
The apple airport works flawlessly.

This issue was a nightmare for me last summer. First, I contacted Apple Support and spent hours on the phone with a very helpful guy who wound up suggesting I contact Actiontec. I got the same response many have posted here, which I forwarded to Qwest tech support. Qwest then swapped out my modem with a Zyxel PK5000-Z -- they told me it would correct the issue, and it has -- I'm now able to use the Apple Remote app. As an added benefit, I'm getting faster connection speeds and things like Netflix and YouTube streaming are >much< more consistent, whereas it used to pause and rebuffer every few minutes.

I'd had the modem for a couple years, but because it was purchased from Qwest and my service is with them, they said swapping it out was covered -- including shipping. The box came with a return label to send the PK5000 back.

You are very lucky. I called Qwest and described the problem. He said it is a known issue and the firmware update is going to fix it. They don't know when it is going to be released. I asked if we could swap our M1000 for one that does work and he said no because it's no longer under warranty. (We got it back in 2007) 😟
He said my only option is to wait for the firmware update or buy a new modem.

Thanks lgibson and others who helped me with this.

I too had the PK5000 issue and e-mailed Qwest, including a link a link to this thread.

I never herad back but less than 72 hours later there was a package on my doorstep that looked alot like a modem and was infact the ZyXEL pk5000z. I've got it hooked and up indeed all is well again.

I'm impressed with Qwest for sending out a new modem so fast, although still weird they never e-mailed me a reply.

I don't believe Qwest will fix the problem. The Actiontec PK5000 will not work with Bonjour or the Apple TV. Response from Qwest below:

QUOTE FROM QUEST: "Mr. Darc, You are correct. The PK5000 Modem we sent you does not support Apple TV. You will receive tomorrow by express mail at no cost to you Modem PK5000Z which does support Apple TV."

If Qwest is not willing to send out a new modem, just switch. It's easy enought to find a good working unit on ebay. +- $50.00

This is getting out of control. Qwest still has not released the updated firmware! I decided to contact them again, for what feels like the 10th time, and the only thing they said was it should be released in the 3rd quarter. I don't know how much longer I can wait. Does it really need to take them this long to release this stupid update? This experience really makes me want to continue to be a loyal Qwest customer!

Zugwang, the problem still persists.
Directly from my chat with Qwest a half hour ago:
Ok your options are this: 1 you can wait. 2 you can contact the business office and see whatthey can do about exchanging you for a different modem 3 you can get a router, then convert the modem to bridge mode and have the router handle everything

PS. Good luck getting it exchanged unless it is still under warranty. I tried that with no luck.

Here is some more information that may or may not help you:
Do all of the modems "not yet" support the multicast protocol?
the zyxel pk5000z does not have that issue

All of the other Qwest supported modems, besides the pk5000z, have this problem as well? So the pk5000z is my only option?
the pk5000z, 3347, q100 q1000 do not have this issue....the first two will work on your line the second two will not .

Ok thanks. What about the gt701wg, gt701, fr1000z, and the other modems I am seeing on Qwest's site?
those are old modems that are no longer offered ...we still support them for those who have them but they are not available

Ok. So the ones that are supported and do have this issue, are they also waiting for this firmware update?
different firmware for each but yes

Interesting that a lot of their modems have this problem and a lot of their customers are affected, but it has taken them years to release a simple firmware update that would solve the problem.
And still we wait...
