iPhone Remote does not work with Actiontec PK5000 router

I have DSL through Qwest. I have an iPhone 3G and a laptop with iTunes all on the same wireless network. My old router broke (don't remember the model) and since then I have not been able to use my iPhone Remote to control iTunes. The iPhone Remote works to control iTunes on the laptop when I'm connected to any other wireless network, so I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the new Actiontec PK5000 router that I got when the old one broke down.

Since it works on other networks, I'm sure that all necessary ports are open through the Windows Firewall on my laptop. As far as I can tell, there should be no packet filtering happening on the router between devices on the wireless network, but something has to be blocking it...

Has anyone had any success with this specific combination (iPhone 3G, fully updated, Laptop running windows 7 and an Actiontec PK5000 router)? Any suggestions what to look at to try and solve this?

Thanks,
Ryan

I've been searching the internet for a solution on this problem on the ActionTec PK5000, for forever. The first time around I was trying to get this setup when I first got my Apple TV back in December was a bit of a nightmare. I was on the phone with an Apple Care Tech and we went through every option available on the router, and computer settings, and couldn't get my wife's Windows 7 PC iTunes Home Sharing to show up on our Apple TV.

Until I eventually put everything on a Ethernet connection, and although that solution works somewhat but it totally ruins the idea of having all my devices on wireless. A WiFi router I paid for which doesn't support the point having my devices on wireless is pretty darn lame.

I'm going to see if I can get Qwest to send me another router that shouldn't have this problem like the ZyXEL pk5000z. I'll report on how things go over with them soon.

Just got done discussing my issue with Qwest Tech Support over their website instant messaging chat. I told them about my issue with iTunes Home Sharing not working over WiFi with my Windows 7 PC, and Apple TV on my Actiontec PK5000 router. And related a link to this forum thread, and told them that I had heard rumors about firmware updates, but most have the problem solved by getting their router exchanged for the ZyXel PK5000z.

The only thing Qwest needed to verify is that I bought the router from them by verify my account number, and address on the account I bought it on. They're now sending me the new router via UPS, and should arrive tomorrow. And I've been given an RMA number so I can send the Actiontec PK5000 back to them.

I'll have to go over the setup process again when I get the new router but hopefully this will fix all the problems I've been having.

I'll report how things go when I get the ZyXel PK5000z router tomorrow, and set it up.

Sorry I do not know which modem is better. I found the specs for the M1000 here and could not find any for the PK5000z. If I had to guess I would assume the PK5000z is better since it was released towards the end of 2010 and the M1000 has been out much longer, around 2007 or 2008 I believe.

Nonetheless, if you already have the PK5000z and it works good then I would not switch for the M100, even if it happens to have better specs for some strange reason. Considering the "newest" firmware was released 3 years ago and the fact that the current one has been "in development" for a very long time, I would be willing to bet it does not get released for a while, probably not in June like they said.

Hooray! The problem is now solved. Qwest emailed me today and said "The PK5000 suffers from the same wireless issues that you reported - but has a new firmware released today."

They then said "Also - with this release for the PK5000, I am guessing that a new firmware for the M1000 should follow shortly."

So my problem still exists, but those of you with the PK5000 (those of you who haven't already bought a new router that is) are in luck! I am not sure whether or not to believe they will be fixing the M1000, since I have been informed this modem was not on the list to receive any updates anytime soon. I'll keep my hopes up, though I will be switching ISPs soon since Qwest only offers 1.5 Mbps in my area.

Cheers!

Sorry to keep this ancient thread alive.

Unfortunately, Qwest (CenturyLink) still has not updated the firmware for the M1000 to fix this problem. 😠

I contacted them a few weeks ago and they said: "Actiontec M1000 QA03 firmware is set for release on 7/18/11 pending lab approval." After questioning them to understand what that means, I understood that it was "supposed" to be released on July 18th and it is just waiting to be approved. I was also told that the M1000 is the only modem currently awaitng to receive an update.

This fix is extremely overdue. It has caused a lot of things to just not work. Hopefully it is released soon...

Happy days for you PK5000 owners, who have had the fix for many months. I've been waiting for the fix for over a year now... 😟
