iPhone Remote does not work with Actiontec PK5000 router

I have DSL through Qwest. I have an iPhone 3G and a laptop with iTunes all on the same wireless network. My old router broke (don't remember the model) and since then I have not been able to use my iPhone Remote to control iTunes. The iPhone Remote works to control iTunes on the laptop when I'm connected to any other wireless network, so I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the new Actiontec PK5000 router that I got when the old one broke down.

Since it works on other networks, I'm sure that all necessary ports are open through the Windows Firewall on my laptop. As far as I can tell, there should be no packet filtering happening on the router between devices on the wireless network, but something has to be blocking it...

Has anyone had any success with this specific combination (iPhone 3G, fully updated, Laptop running windows 7 and an Actiontec PK5000 router)? Any suggestions what to look at to try and solve this?

Thanks,
Ryan

I have this exact same issue. My devices work fine on other wireless networks. I have also checked all of the suggested fixes in iTunes but it's only when I'm connected to the PK5000 that this problem occurs. I also just realized my AirportExpress drops off the network after a few minutes of being configured. Now I don't have remote speakers either. 😟

People are having the same problems with a Qwest Actiontec M1000 modem. I have the M1000 modem but I didn't order the wifi module because I already had a Airport Extreme Base Station. Because I didn't get the wifi module, I never had these problems with the remote app.

In that thread that I referred to, I don't think anyone ever found any answers.

Not really a solution, but at least I have a $100 work-around...

(in reply to the guy that didn't want to pay for AirPort Extreme)
It doesn't have to be AirPort Extreme, you can use AirPort Express just as well to be your wireless router:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB321LL/A/AirPort-Express-AirTunes?fnode=MTY1N DA0Mg&mco=MTA4NTc4MTE
It's $99, cheaper than the $179 for Extreme.

Anyway, I spent all day on the phone b/t conference calls with Qwest and Apple, and Qwest was no help at all! I officially do not care for them or the service they provide, and I've been using it for less than a month! 😟

Here's how I set it up:
Disable WPS on Qwest modem/built-in wireless router (thru your web browser, type in your Qwest given IP address to open Qwest Modem Configuration, once to the blue page click on "wireless setup", click the circle button for off, scroll down, and click apply). The yellow ethernet cable that did connect to your computer now needs to plug-in to the underside of the AirPort Express (you might need to plug in the ethernet cable to AirPort Express when unplugged, hold a paperclip on the reset button while plugging in and wait for the light to flash to reset to factory default settings in case you have used it previously for AirTunes). Follow on screen instructions. So now you have airport express as your "wireless router" instead.

Apple remote connected in less than a second for me and is currently working. I now have my whole house and AirTunes connected to my new wireless network via airport express.

Stupid Qwest and their ActionTec modem routers!

I used the same work-around as clear_star. I contacted actiontec and they told me remote access/media streaming is a known issue with the pk5000. For some reason, it cannot connect remotely to many devices (iphones, gaming consoles, etc..), meaning I could not connect to my xbox 360. Turning off the wireless function and using the airport express I already had was the perfect work around for my problem. Too bad the pk5000 has this issue, because I love it's speed.

I have another work around if your computer has Airport on it. Set up a (secured) computer-to-computer network using Airport and connect iPhone or Ipod/touch Remote to iTunes that way. I believe we found that you can't use that network to connect to Airport Express; but no matter, you use the network associated with the Actiontec to do that. I could also have used a NetGear modem that I have lying around, disabling the WiFi on the ActionTec, but this also works.

I've had the same issue. Got the new PK5000 from Qwest and as soon as i hoooked up i get spotty connections to the airtunes/itunes/airport express.

itunes will recognize it after I restart airport express hub, but then shortly afterward it will give me an error "cannot connect".

Looks like this hasn't been solved?

I guess I'll have to shell out $179 for airport extreme base station. darn.

I was having the same problem with no solution in sight. I downloaded the new iTunes 10 today and apple seems to have found a solution. I am now able to get my remote app to work on both my laptop (wired ethernet connection) and laptop (wireless). Also I am able to get my two computers to recognize each other via Home Sharing. Thank you apple for fixing this annoying problem!
