HP LaserJet 1000

I have a rather old HP LaserJet 1000 which I have been using with Windows XP up until recently. I switched to a MacBook Pro that runs Snow Leopard. However when I hooked up the printer via its USB interface I wasn't able to see it as an available printer. After doing some digging I find that it may not be one of the supported printers in Snow Leopard. HP was not very helpful either. I don't have MacOS listed in their support page for that printer.

My question is: has anyone been able to use the same printer with Snow Leopard?

Thanks.

Okay - this worked for me: Follow the directions here: http://hasin.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/getting-hp-1020-laserjet-printer-working-o n-snow-leopard/. Be sure to install the downloaded software in the order specified (Ghost, foomatic RIP, foo2zjs). But there's an extra step for the hp 1000.

In the Helpers folder of the foo2zjs install package, run the "Install Printer Extras" command. There's a list of extra firmware that can be installed. The HLPJ 1000 is #4, so you type "4" at the prompt at the bottom of the window and hit enter. (Before this program runs, you will be warned about running downloaded software, and you may need to enter your administrator password.) This fixes the error "firmware not found" when running the load LaserJet_firmwarev4 command.

Under Leopard I still had a lot of problems with this setup - I could print a few pages, then I'd have to reset everything to get the printer to work again. We'll see if there is any change with Snow Leopard and these later versions of the open source printer utilities.

Thanks fort the VERY useful link. I have followed all the steps and my Imac recognize the laserjet 1000. That's great, yet.
But when I want to print something (my printer bieng plugged !), even if the printer appears in the printer window, it says that the laserjet is "pausing". I click on "go back to work" (I translate from french) and then on "print". But nothing happens. On the printer dashboard, it says again that it's impossible to use this printer and that it's pausing. I ask it to "stop pausing" but that doesn't work. I wonder how to fix that.

Could it be because I can't follow the extra tip that you give? When I open the "install printer extras", there is nothing in the window. The is no "list of extra firmware that can be installed"...

Gilda, see two main points below:

1. If you have installed the correct printer driver, then when you load the firmware (that's the "load laserjet_firmwarev4.command" file that you run) you will get a message like the one below. Note that the location of the driver file sihp1000.dl: /usr/local/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1000.dl. If the file is there, then you don't need to "install printer extras", and the load laserjetfirmware program will find the file.

load laserjetfirmware output (partial):
Printer HP LaserJet1000:
Sending HP LaserJet 1000 firmware to printer HP LaserJet1000 . . .
lp -d HP LaserJet1000 -oraw /usr/local/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1000.dl

2. The foo2zjs utility makes it possible to use the laserjet, but it doesn't solve all the problems. Someone on these pages says he never turns off his printer after he's loaded the firmware. I have been trying that, but I had to reload the firmware again today in order to print. Under Leopard, I did the following things to get the printer going again. Sometimes one would work, sometimes I would have to take the further steps:
- delete the print job and firmware load attempts from the queue
- reload the firmware, or
- power the printer off & on, then reload the firmware, or
- power the printer off & on, "uninstall" and reinstall the printer on the Mac, then reload the firmware ...

I don't know yet what steps will be necessary with Snow Leopard. There are definitely differences in Snow Leopard's print interface, so perhaps just refreshing the firmware will do the trick. I'm starting to wonder whether certain kinds of print jobs wipe out the printer's memory and/or overwrite the firmware, so that all or some of the installation steps need to be repeated.

Hi I have the same problem (I think) as Gilda.
I have a HP Laserjet 1000 and snowleopard

1) installed (GhostScript 8.64)
2) installed foomatic-rip-4.0.2.211.dmg
3) installed foo2zjs-1.1.2-ub.dmg
4) from helpers I copied load LaserJet_firmwarev4 to Desktop
5) Pluged my printer into a USB Port
6) Added printer from System Preferences, Print & Fax, click the + (plus) sign in on the lower left side, make sure you are on the default tab, click your printer, then under Print Using chose: HP LaserJet 1000 Foomatic/foo2zjs (recommended))

BUT....

when I run the load LaserJet_firmwarev4 script
terminal window says:
Not a qualifying HP LaserJet printer
Tried adding and deleting printer several times

So I did this over and over again... and finally a window load firmware came up but I could not choose my USB connected printer so I closed it. Now when I press load firmware it doesn't do anything. So I assume it has been loaded, but I still cannot print.
It says unable to send print data and then it pauses.
Ideas or suggestions?
