DVD, Blu Ray DVDs, and iTunes with Apple TV

I just got Apple TV for Christmas and I have a massive collection of DVDs, TV Series on DVD, and some Blu Ray DVDs. I was wondering if there was anyway to IMPORT DVDs from my DVDs onto Apple TV since there is no disc load and I do not have a digital copy. In addition, if you can IMPORT your DVDs into iTunes can you use Blu Ray DVDs?

Also, when ordering from iTunes is there anyway to get a hard disc copy as well as the digital copy, I am still not used to the whole idea that you have the movie on a hard drive and not on a disc.

Hope you guys can help!

Thank you AC that was most helpful. I will definitely continue buying digital movies from iTunes then and won't worry about the disc!

To recap, Blu Ray will still give you the ultimate quality currently, HD downloads from Apple are 720p not 1080p - this is partly AppleTV hardware limitation, but also a practical consideration as many people don't have blazing broadband speeds - still takes me 12 hours or so on a 1Mbps connection to download a HD movie rental, if I was trying to get the Blu Ray equivalent it would take days!

I find Apple TV to be an awesome gadget especially for playing music through my surround sound on TV instead of having to plug it into speakers for parties.

Music playback is why I got mine first, and I still think it's worth it for that alone, though with cheaper media players appearing left right and centre AppleTv starts to look comparatively expensive.

Remember AppleTV can also playback video you suitably encode for yourself eg home camcorder footage or perhaps off-air recordings from some PVRs.

Personally I tend to rent more movies from iTunes Store than buy but that's because in UK we can only currently buy SD movies but can rent HD.

itunes SD quality is sometimes near DVD quality but can be a lot worse (often for music videos and TV Shows I find) and I will frequently still buy DVDs, as much as I hate physical discs, because they're often much cheaper from the likes of Amazon than the downloads.

The problem with SD downloads from iTunes is that they need to play on iPods/iPhones too.

I've bought a couple of Blu Rays - usually because they have digital copies included and are good value overall especially if they contain the DVD too, but watching on teh PS3 is a real chore.

The hard thing to know is what's going to win out online in a few years and what formats there'll be playing on what devices then. May be iTunes formats, may be someone else, no one knows or can accurately predict.

sadly the digital copies are always just SD though.
seems a scam that you buy an HD blu-ray and get given an SD digital copy.

I couldn't agree more, though I bet it's a worldwide thing not just for us in UK.

I have been impressed with the quality of some of these though - sometimes SD from itunes Store is a bit of a gamble for the big screen, music videos in particular are bad, not just old ones transferred from VT.

Wow, this forum turned out to be great.

I have seen Blu Rays on PS3 and other Blu Ray players the quality is quite exceptional, and you can rent via Netflix (which prices vary).

I think its cool you can go to YouTube right from your Apple TV and have a scree saver of all your pictures. It is nice for the holiday, nothing says Merry Christmas like an embarrassing slide show of your family on a 55" HDTV haha!!!!

Thanks again everyone. Lets hope in the future iTunes DVD format is the way!

I will check out Handrake for "back ups" of my DVD collection. Thank you for that tid bit of Legality. Some people just misunderstand where you are coming from. I own the DVDs I have the rights to them

whatever you think you have the rights to, you don't have the right to break the encryption on a DVD (ie rip it ) and Handbrake can't actually do that anwyay. in the US you are restricted by the DMCA, and in almost every other country it's the same.

regardless of legality anyway, the discussion is not permitted as per the Ts&Cs of this forum so hopefully now you understand.

Oh that it were so.

You may own the DVD, and you can watch is as often as you like but that does not mean you are legally allowed to do whatever you want with the DVD.

Fair use notions/common sense would suggest that you ought to be able to make a backup of something you bought or do anything else provided it was for your own personal use. However in reality the law may differ depending on where you live and under what jurisdiction, and particularly in relation to digital media.

You may want to Google DMCA.
