SD card in the cd slot

I just did a very stupid thing!!!

I wanted to upload some photos from my SD card, and I accidentally put it in the cd/dvd slot instead of in the SD slot. Now it's stuck there, and I can't get it out - anyone knows if it's possible to get it out without harming the iMac, or do I have to go to the Apple Store to get help?

Stupid me 😟

Happy New Year everyone!

I just joined this club today with my iMac... :-(

I tried the just about every tip here (except the paper clip) with no luck. Then I tried this one (see above using index cards) but had to put creases on each side near the taped side to widen it once it got into the slot. Started at the top of the slot, pushed it in and slid the 'card' down and after a couple of s-l-o-w slides, WALAA! out it came. I couldn't find my index cards but used one of those mailers from Office Depot which has thick paper, folded one side in half, then half again, taped one end and then creased both sides inward (to create an imaginary opening) near the tape. I hope I NEVER have to do this again!!

Paperclip trick worked. This was a very scary moment, since the card had stuff I really needed on it. Took a long paperclip, and bent the end. Turned the iMac off, and tilted it on its side so gravity helped me. Tried it without doing this and had zero success. Once it was on it's side, and gentle slide from the top of the cd slot to the bottom revealed my card enough that I could grab it.

Lesson here is to not let go of the SD card. Hang on to the top 1/4 inch of the card. If you miss, at least you have enough card to grab.

Hi,

I got the card out a few minutes ago by forming a heavy duty plastic cable tie into a (flat) slight hook using a propane torch to heat it (and a pair of pliers to bend it). I didn't quite trust the paper clip thing, after all there is metal showing at the ends of even a plastic coated one. Of course the Mac should be powered down and the power cable and other connections removed. Shaking the thing did nothing for me, besides it is HEAVY. I

had to fish around a little while and rather deeply into the drive bay inserting the hook fairly high on the bay. Easy and gently does it! The hook did touch components of the drive mechanism before it delivered the SD Card.

Both, the drive and the SD card still work just fine.

Saved Cdn $400 quoted by BestBuy, who told me replaceing the drive was the only option.

Thanks to everyone here for their help!

Good luck.

Bless you all for your stupidity (and mine of course!) and ingenuity! 😁 I got the card out third try with the paper clip. It is so easy to make this mistake--Apple should really think about a simple redesign--even just putting them a few inches apart would save an awful lot of stress. Considering there are fifteen pages on this question alone, it seems like a pretty common error--and this is only the people who took the time to write something.

Apple, are you listening?!!!

They have listened, and solved the problem on the current iMacs. Of course it is not possible to redesign the previous models as they are no longer made.
