SD card in the cd slot

I just did a very stupid thing!!!

I wanted to upload some photos from my SD card, and I accidentally put it in the cd/dvd slot instead of in the SD slot. Now it's stuck there, and I can't get it out - anyone knows if it's possible to get it out without harming the iMac, or do I have to go to the Apple Store to get help?

Stupid me 😟

Happy New Year everyone!

Thanks all, for all the ideas! My husband and I had the same problem with the SD card stuck in the CD slot and tried all the ideas. It was a bit comforting at least that others had done the same thing! Nothing seemed to work and we were beside ourselves! The SD card seemed to be stuck way into the slot. We even tried vacuuming with no success. Just when we were ready to give up, I decided to search my sewing supplies for something else to try and came out with a long plastic loop turner. Perhaps because it was longer than our other tools, it finally popped out-but it took a few tries. Boy did we cheer! Just wanted to leave others with another possible solution that worked!

New tip!

Just happened to us, first to me a month ago and now to my husband. I got it out the first time using only a needle as it was so close. The second time, L shaped didnt work for us, it was too far as I managed to push it way back before I found this page.

So, I dont know if this tip allready is here, but this worked perfectly for us:

1. Take a thin cd-disc cover made of cardboard.

2. Cut a 4cm wide piece of it so that it forms a loop.

3. Bend the loop wider so that when you push it inside the cd slot it will open.

4. Insert the cardboard -loop to the slot and fish out the card.

Came out with a third try.

I also just did the same thing and am devasted. I was trying to set up my new go pro and accidentally slipped the sd card into the CDdisk slot. I tried the L shaped card and tried gently to move and couldnt feel it and so tried to turn the comuter sideways. I got the card out but appear to have damaged my disk drive so now need to lug in the large iamc in for repairs. Having seen 128,000 people view this blog I think it really is a major design flaw that so many people can do the same thing. For such a tiny card a front view or at least on teh opposite side of the monitor woudl ahve been a sensible option from a design point of view.

I've also done the same, eventually got it out by turning the iMac on its side and fishing the card out with a piece of plastic I'd cut into an L shape. Unfortunately it looks like I've damaged the DVD drive in the process though, when I push a disk it just ejects again

This is the final straw for me with the Mac. This is just typical Apple – aesthetics over functionality, yes the iMac is beautifully engineered but it has USB ports that are inaccessible, a 'so called UK' keyboard layout that actually is just US keyboard with the # removed and with £ sign in its place, do Apple not think we use # the in the UK! No numeric keypad, a mouse that is so flat it gives you cramp in your hand. OSX is just different to Windows and by no means better, and of course an SD Card slot 10mm away from a DVD lot in drive! And all this at a premium price, what was I thinking!….back to a functional PC for me.

Just did the same thing, and after looking at the prices my local Apple Certified technician would charge at $100 an hour, we unplugged everything, used a thin L-shape piece of cardboard, turned it upside down, smacked the back a few times, and after about 2-3 minutes, out it came! We then tried both the CD player and putting the memory card in the right spot, and everything worked perfectly!! Thanks for all the advice, it saved us a bundle!
