SD card in the cd slot

I just did a very stupid thing!!!

I wanted to upload some photos from my SD card, and I accidentally put it in the cd/dvd slot instead of in the SD slot. Now it's stuck there, and I can't get it out - anyone knows if it's possible to get it out without harming the iMac, or do I have to go to the Apple Store to get help?

Stupid me 😟

Happy New Year everyone!

Vacuum cleaner worked very well..... did not wan to do internal damage with paper clip.....used duct tape as explained above..turned the mac in its side and switched on..... had to sake slightly then ti DS card was sucked out..did not even have to use full power on the vacuum!

HINT..... put a clean bag in the vacuum first - i have just disected the contents of the dust bag to look for SD card messy !

BUT... could not find it ..turns out it got stuck to the duct tape on the way out....BONUS!!!

I am guessing my iMac is super dust free inside too now !!!

Thx for tips

When I slipped an SD card into the SuperDrive slot last night I thought I was the stupidest person on earth. It was a little reassuring to find that others had made the same mistake.

I read the suggestions in this thread and decided to try a somewhat simpler method than cutting out a slot in a piece of cardboard. I cut a piece of stiff paper (thin cardboard would work as well) about one-inch wide and the usual 8-1/2 inches long. I folded it in half so that I had a folded strip one-inch wide and about four-inches long. I deliberately left the fold a little open so that it looked more like a U than a tight crease. Holding onto the "open" end, I inserted the folded end into the SuperDrive slot near the top of the slot. (I was careful not to push it in so far as to lose my grip on the open end. With the folded paper inserted well into the slot, I slid it down to the bottom of the slot and slowly pulled it out. I was highly relieved when it captured the SD card on the first try and dragged it out of the drive.

So after reading through and having no luck with either paperclip, long wire, anything else poke-y and then inserting a cd (not too sure what the logic was there) I finally cut a piece of (thin) cardboard and put double sided tape on the end. A bit tricky to get thorugh the entry slot but it did the trick! - I wouldn't recommend a paperclip as you could hook the cd mechanism and therefore cost yourself WAY more than just getting the sd card out.

Thanks for all your input- best to try gingerly at home first!

I've done it twice. Crazy to think they put it RIGHT next to the drive.. You have to STAND UP, go around and carefully put it in. Anyway, I got it out with a paperclip. Use a BIG paperclip extend it like a big letter L and slide it in a few times. I took me 5 tries and then it came out... UGH Jonathan Ives, can you put the SD slot on the other side?

Just have to say the jumbo paperclip worked like a charm. I'm happy I'm not the only one who made this mistake! After trying to knock the card out with a small paperclip, a cd, a ruler and that cardboard contraption some people suggested (which also got stuck but came out after some jiggling), I lifted and turned the screen to its side and used the jumbo paperclip hook and the SD card came out on the first try! It would have been a huge pain in the *** to drag this beast computer to the apple store and be without a work computer until they fixed it. Thanks again to all of the contributors of this thread!

Hi,

just happened to me now, besides I was stupid enough to then insert a CD just to make things worse,

h o w e v e r after takeing that recommended long paper clip shaped into L and juggled the dam monitor sidewise and then after some 10 Minutes, first the CD suddenly ejected... and after "scraping" the bottom from midsection down I could somehow catch the SD and retrieve it carefully.

I must hve lost some pounds in the course of trying but eventually: Happy me!

I inserted a DVD and it all works fine, no harm done.

Now, you can be sure I will never ever blindly fiddle the SD card into that wrong spot again, although I am fully with the guys who claim, all very nice looking, but practical ?? Well, you know the answer!

Thanks for posting - it sure works, just with patience and dedication it should come out.

My best!
