Horizontal Lines in a fritz

My PB G4 has been fritzing horizontal lines intermittently. Sometimes the computer is fine, and then it starts. The lines are all over the screen, but the desktop/windows are still in the background. Moving the screen will affect the behaviour, making it better or worse. It will not do this on bootup until the blue screen appears, but usually not until the login window shows up. The lines don't show up on a sceen capture. Sometimes I can continue working, but it will usually "freeze", that is to say that the computer is unresponsive except for trackpad movement. I can hold the power button to shut off or use the keyboard force restart.

Help.

Macniak, my computer is Ti Powerbook 15 inch with a 1 GHz processor. It also has a Superdrive. It is about 14 months old. I did run the diagnostics with the supplied hardware test disc. The disc worked like a charm. I wish I could say the same for my Powerbook.

ditto... had a similar problem on my tibook 1ghz. unfortunately for me the computer would lock-up so even an external monitor wouldn't help. i left Console and Process Viewer running hoping i could find the source - no luck. my problem was intermittent so i was able to run the hardware test - everything passed.... but still horizontal lines and lockup, even when rebooting to a separate partition. i was sure it was some harware failure. i pulled out my apple warranty stuff and used the System Profiler to check my serial number. while doing that i happened to notice the logs pane. under Console Log there was a reference to:
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData():plist parse failed;the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this Contents/Info.plist -- file://localhost/System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon8500.kext The parser will retry as in 10.1, but the problem should be corrected in the plist

well i couldn't find the proper plist (mac novice) so i wandered into that extension folder to see what it is. i know plist items can be looked at/modified by textedit, so i double click the ATIRadeon8500.kext and i'm promted to pick an application to open it. i know it's not a plist but i choose textedit anyway- wham all my kext icons turn to folders. i reboot and no more flicker no more lockups. hopefully someone more knowledgeable can shed some light on this, but i've been running 7 days straight - good as new (knock on titanium)

well sure as sh*t... on the eight day we had a power outage. normally no big deal but at the time i was switching the boot volume from my external firewire drive to the internal. all seemed fine though. i put the computer to sleep and 4 hours later, when the power was restored, i rebooted and there was our friend - Fritz. this time the "opening the kext with textedit trick" didn't work so i struggled to get rebooted from my internal startup disk, enabled root and removed all the ATIRadeon stuff from my firewire startup disk. rebooted into my firewire system and Fritz is gone.

I wish someone from apple would check these posts and offer some feedback. for all i know this won't solve it because it's a hardware issue and i'm spreading bogus info, but for now i'm fritz-free.

it's interesting that quite a few people experienced this at around the same time ( 6-7 months after they bought them)

hopefully this is my last post...

My screen went into terminal vertical lines a year ago and there is no fix sans replacing the screen for $1000.00 IMHO these are design flaws. Some are heat related some are defective screens that just die and some are hinge related, motherboard related, backlight related, inverter board related so if you are out of warrantee you might as well throw your laptop into the dumpster. It will cost you $50 to have someone tell you that your computer is broken.

I guess I'm still bitter about getting ripped for $2000.00

I have been battling this same problem for 6 months now. Twice I took it in for local service and they couldn't recreate the problem. Now I'm thinking "duh." Of course they couldn't. If heat is the issue then the one or two times they book it up wouldn't lead to trouble. Of course when I get home, the problem shows up again.

I recently had an issue with my hinges (the screen case around both hinges just snapped) and was forced to call Apple in prayer that they would fix it (I have AppleCare). Since the LCD is undamaged they said they could. I mentioned my screen problem and the guy acted like "oh yeah, everyone is having that problem you are describing. We'll have to replace a logic board."

This time I mailed it off for hinge/case repairs and a new logic board. I called Wednesday, got the box and dropped it in the mail Friday. I've heard in other threads that this is usually the quicker way to get repairs done. Most local places take longer even without the delay of mailing. I'll let you know if this solves things. So far my confidence is high though and I hope to be back on my PowerBook in a week.

I do not recommed using the CompUSA service centers. All the ones in KC have one guy who touches Macs and he or she isn't really all that qualified. He acted like he'd never heard of my problems before and didn't really give time to my machine (most times when I called he was on-site working on some corporate account). AppleCare and mailing the thing off to California seems the best way to go.

Just want to add my fritzing scenario to the list. Started 7 months after purchase. Not heat related, because it often occurs right after startup. What this problem calls for is a screen refresh. I keep the display icon handy on the menu bar, then just change the screen resolution back and forth. Pain in the *ss, but it works.
Bigger question is: what's next to go unsupported? (byte me)

Used to get the fritz. It went away but was replaced by a block of stripes of vertical lines about half inch by half inch moving around with the cursor. This is accompanied by seemingly random black and red pixel noise around windows. It all started about 7 months after purchase. Used to go away on re-start. Now a fixture. Apple quoting about 600GBP to replace logic board or graphic card.

I got my powerbook back today. It's been just a few hours shy of a week since I called AppleCare about it. Much better than my experiences with CompUSA. Their "Apple" techs are worthless. My hinges were fixed and a logic board was replaced. So far so good but a few days of constant use is the only way to tell for sure.

If it does work, I am impressed with the turnaround on the repair. I thought I would save time having it done locally, but that took longer to get no results at all.

It might be different if you have an actual Apple Store, but we don't have those in the midwest.
