iPod Classic will not restore because firmware file cannot be found

It was suggested by an Apple store agent that I should restore my ipod to stop a an issue with tracks skipping that I suspect are related to bad sectors on the disk as all the songs play ok on my macbook.

However, when I try to restore I get an error reporting that the ipod firmware file cannot be found.

I have been unable to find any solution on the forums as to how I might resolve this issue.

Please advise how I might replace the firmware file and restore the ipod (the agent confirmed that bad sectors will be corrected during the restore process).

Thanks...Ian

1.Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it

2.Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3

3.Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4

4.Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.

BE AWARE:
A low level format will cause the hard disk to scan the entire surface of the hard drive. The iPod will get really hot when doing this.

kind regards

Joe.

Joe,
Ran the Erase process and this has had no impact on the issue. I have checked that the Pod_24.1.1.2.ipsw is in the software update directory and is the one I refreshed when las went through this routine. Looking at the file details the file seems to have been accessed by iTunes a short while after I downloaded it when I attempted to re-run the restore I suspect.

As such I remain unclear which file it is looking for...is it checking the iPOD file perhaps for current version maybe.

I await further direction.

I have not seen any further guidance to this problem...however I did manage to run the restore from a friends macbook pro an remain unclear why I could not.

The reason for going through this wa to resolve a skipping problem with a large number of tracks. This restore has not made any difference and the tracks skip the same as they did before (they play OK on the mac itunes app) and they are also OK on our other ipod.

Can anyone advise how to fix this disk issue?
