iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (6)

Hi everyone.

I have the latest version of iTunes, & after successfully uploading some cds to my iPod, decided to update my iPhone 3G as hadn't done so in weeks.

I keep getting íPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (6)'. After about five tries, including restarting the computer, I am still getting the same message. It's not a firewall problem either.

I don't have access to another PC, & was wondering if there is anything else I can try, or if anyone else is having this problem, before calling Apple support (it's 1am here so stressed knowing I have to wait 8 hrs to get an operator).

I'm looking at the black screen of my iPhone and feel sick at the thought I may have lost everything, and need to be contacted on this phone from 6am onwards. If anyone could offer any help/talk-throughs, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thank you.

Looking back... i think my 1601 error was the caused by an issue where my computer was recognizing the iphone as a camera device, not as the iphone. After i got back on my feet by restoring on a mac, I realized my computer didnt recognize the iphone in itunes, and it WAS recognized in "My Computer" as a camera device.

This is NOT the reason for your problem. The iPhone SHOULD be recognized as a camera device, because it is. Any time there are photos in the Camera Roll it will be recognized as a camera so you can get the photos off it (you cannot with iTunes). It should ALSO be recognized by iTunes, but the fact that it is recognized as a camera is expected behavior.

Hi,

I ran into this issue when trying to restore my phone and fought with Unknown Error 6 for nearly a day, until I tried the following:

Used canned air to blow out the iPod connector, dampened a small piece of paper towel with a very small amount of Windex and then used an extremely small flathead screwdriver to very gently clean the connector's metal surfaces. Let it dry for a few seconds. Plugged it in, put it in DFU restore mode and Voilà... Restored perfectly.

This was literally after at least 25 tries including new firmware downloads, downloading and installing iTunes again, trying to restore on two different computers, using two different iPhone USB cables... and on and on to no avail.

Apparently a couple years of living in my pocket had gummed up the connector a bit.

While you need to make your own decision and proceed AT YOUR OWN RISK, this worked for me.
