Need to compress video to 25mb

I'm entering a contest where the video can be no larger than 25mb. How do I export to keep it as samll as possible? Should I export for ipod settings? Should I just export and find a software to compress it after? IF so, what do you suggest I use?

Last questions - what format keeps files the smallest (ie -.mov, AVI, MP4, etc)?

Macbook pro, Final Cut Express

What are the requirements of the contest? They really should have specifications in more detail than just the file size.

Also, what is the nature of your original video (SD DV, HD, etc) and how long is it (in time)?

No 'format' determines the file size (you asked about .mov, AVI, MP4). What determines the file size is the codec used and the various parameters for each codec (these are things you would select when you do Export > QuickTime Conversion in FCE.)

Actually, I don't know the final size of my video. It's not complete. I'm just sure it will trun out larger than 25mb. Given my Fri deadline I'm trying to be proactive in the event I need to reduce the size.

The contest requirements are max 60secs (which I should hit) and 25mb. That's it for specs. I don't know how to compress during the export. I typically keep the same setting and export to .mov

Thanks for the help!

Oh, sorry I forgot to say it was recorded in HD (just bought a new camera and couldn't figure out how to change to SD. The last HD I recorded was huge. That's why I'm sure it will be over the 25mb requirement.

The footage was about 5-6 min. I have successfully cut it the relevant pcs totallu about 40 sec. One more piece to add today that will put it right at the 60 sec req't.

Select File>Export>Using QT Conversion.

In the window that opens select Lan/Intranet from the "Use" dropdown menu.

Then select the "Options" button and then click on "Size".

Change the Dimensions setting to 1280 x 720 HD.

A one minute video should be under 25 MB.

You could even set it to 1920 x 1080 HD and it should still be well under 25MB. . . . probably around 15 MB.

You are correct I said the video was HD. The first time I recorded from this camera the output was HD/widescreen (as you mentioned this defaults to widescreen). I think I successfully changed the setting on my camera. But, it still came out widescreen. To make a long story short, needing to finish this last night I did some basic problem solving. You had given me the method for changing the size. So, I knew the solution to change to SD had to be in the same area. I first changed to NTSC DV 720x480 because I recognize those dimensions as standard video. But, after exporting it didn't turn out right. I then remembered the dimensions you gave me specifically had "HD" behind them. So, I found the closest dimensions to what I know to be SD with the specific "SD" label behind it (720x486 SD). This turned out great.

Thank you again... and pray for my success with the contest!

FYI - +my new camera is a Cannon XH A1 - I bought this camera because I keep getting request for video. And felt I could no longer get by with the Best Buy consumer camcorder. As a result, I've been learning on the fly. Need to find a quick class in the Detroit area.+
