Dell U2410 does not enter low power mode with Mac Pro energy saver

There have been a few smatterings around about this issue, but no resolution as yet. I got a Dell U2410 LCD and it's connected to my Dual 2.66 Core Duo Mac Pro with an nVidia GeForce 7300GT.

If the computer goes to sleep, the monitor will correctly enter power save mode. However, if the display is put to sleep (through Energy Saver), it says "Entering Power Save Mode" then powers down and powers back on again immediately and repeats this cycle endlessly.

Other monitors connected to the computer have not had this problem, and it powers down properly when connected to certain Macs as well, and all PCs as far as I can tell. So it seems to be an issue of a power trickle out the DVI and ADC ports (same behavior when connected to either and connected to either DVI port or HDMI port on the monitor) when it should be powered down.

Dell's response is, "We don't test on Macs." That's not ideal, but not likely to change. However, since it behaves properly on most hardware, including some Macs, I'm hoping it's an issue that can be addressed through drivers, but the problem doesn't seem to be widespread enough, or the people experiencing it vocal enough to elicit a response from Apple. I hope I'm wrong.

Prove me wrong, Apple!

Edit: A couple other bits of information. I did try disconnecting all USB from the monitor with no change in behavior. If you connect the monitor via an analog method, such as a VGA cable, it will sleep, but that's hardly a viable workaround.

Hi,

I just got the Dell U2410 and have the same problem with my Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon2.66 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.
I'm on 10.5.8 and hope this will have a solution with 10.6.2, but I just see that it will not.
I wonder if a PC with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT have the same problem???

With my MBP it's work fine, so I guess the solution should come from Apple.

(Adriano, please let me know if you find any solution)

I have the same problem with a Lenovo ThinkVision L220 which is the top of the line monitor that Lenovo makes. I specifically bought this monitor because it is a PVA screen, not the cheap TN like most newer screens.

Anyway, I have a dual 2.66 Mac Pro 1.1, with the standard nVidia 7300 GT card. I do numerical work, so I have no intention of paying $400 for an ATI card.

This is obviously a problem with this particular card, as it it will not put the Dell to sleep, and it will not put a ThinkVision to sleep properly.

Please Apple, how about some help on this issue!!!

I have a very similar spec also. The pair of U2410's (updated revision A01) connected to it won't go into sleep mode (just go black, with backlight still on).

The pair of cheapie BenQ 2420HD's I had connected while I waited for the Dells went into sleep mode fine.

Someone on another forum noted that they had a different model Dell on Mac with the same problem, and he found it only happened when the USB uplink cable was connected to the Mac. I disconnected mine (uplink and down), but no change unfortunately.

Google searching seems to suggest this is almost exclusively only with a Dell/Mac combo (same monitor on PC works fine and other brands on Mac work fine). These U2410 monitors get an absolute bagging on most forums, and I think most of it is deserved. These will both be going back for a refund with severe blue/pink tints making them visually perform worse than the BenQ's that were 1/3 the price. What's the point of spending 2 to 3 times the amount on IPS monitors when they're off colour even right in front of them!

The HP 24" IPS uses the same crap LG panel as these Dells, I can't justify 2 x 30" Apple Cinema displays for AU$5000, and one just won't cut it. No simple answer it seems....

Cheers

Dav
