I have a black Performa 5400/180. It has been running fine for years! A couple of days ago I switched it off at the end of the day. Now it will not start up again. When the power is switched on you hear the characteristic 'clunk' from inside the box, but the keyboard on switch has no effect. I have tried using a different keyboard, still nothing.
Any ideas please/

The power switch on the back should be thought of as a "service" switch. If you shut it off daily, you reduce the life of the PRAM backup battery, which maintains many setting that make your Mac more convenient in daily use. Your battery is now likely so low that the Mac cannot start up.
many online sellers sell those batteries cheaply to attract you to their sites.
I suspect your internal memory battery - 4.5V Alkaline - has died/is weak & needs replacement. Check this site for battery part numbers and sources.

New battery arrived in the post today - only the second post this year due to heavy snow in the Welsh Marches! Fitted and the computer starts up fine. Thank you for your help
