Mail hangs on search

All,

I am having continual problems with Mail hanging on a search. I have to force quit to get out of it. Happens several times a day. When I restart the program, if I run the same search it hangs again. But if I first change the mailbox and do some other things, then it seems to run the search OK (usually).

Ideas? Bug in the program? Do others have this problem?

How frustrating. I just want to find this one message and get to work! Hope someone can help with this, because it's driving me nuts too. Time Machine is busy backing up -- maybe it's preventing Mail from searching anything stored on an IMap server. Time Machine has a way of slowing everything dowwwwwwwn.

Same problem for me, but worse. Can't search in Mail or just about anything on my main drive or backups. I've done tests on file names that I KNOW are there, but Mac's search function can't find them. I saw one backup drive stuck in "indexing" mode so I guessed that could be a problem. Very lame that there's no control over indexing on the Mac.
