Nano not updating Play Count

I just recently purchased the 5G Nano 16G and upgraded it to the latest firmware 1.3. Since getting the nano I added about 300 or so new songs to it and carried over about 1300 old ones. I was shuffling a lot of the new music on my way to and from work. When I got home I noticed that none of the songs play counts were updated.

So I decided to test it out at home, played a couple of songs, checked if they appeared on the recently played list and the first time I tried it, they did update. Then I ran a few more songs from various playlists/artists and those didn't appear on the recently played list nor were their play counts updated.

The issue seems to be on the Ipod itself and not with iTunes, and it appears to be random, although more often then not it does not update. It seems to be some sort of issue with memory where if 3+ songs are played it fails to store any of them as played. I couldn't find any answers to a solution so I came here hoping to find some answers. Thanks in advance.

This is an odd one, I have a 160gb Classic, a 1gb shuffle, 2gb shuffle and a 5th gen Nano.

The classic & shuffles sync perfectly every time but my Nano does not update play counts for some reason.

I used it for around eight hours yesterday and upon syncing it today none of the play counts were changed (I kept a rough note of what I listened to but none of there play counts increased and the last played stayed unchanged.

Frustrating to say the least as I use a lot of smart playlists to keep my content on the ipod's fresh.

I did try the 'play a bit of podcast before finishing idea' but no effect, is this an Nano problem, iTunes problem or PC problem?

hey, I have the same problem too. I don't know if it was already mentioned, but it seems not to scrobble after any change has been made to the ipod itself e.g. a change in a genius playlist, new music uploaded, etc. Also, it refuses to scrobble several times after new music is uploaded. It's extremely innfuriating. When is apple going to fix this?

I had called Applecare about this; they had me reset the iPod and that worked for a couple of weeks. Now it is back. I am surprised this seemingly simple problem has not been fixed by now; I will be speaking with them again tomorrow. Given I bought this Nano for the gym and I rely on smart playlist to organize it, this problem is terribly frustrating!

Over 50 minutes on the phone; I think they finally understood the problem and then told me there is nothing they can do. They will forward it to engineering and get back to me on whether this is being looked at. I enquired about whether I can exchange this and and get a shuffle, but, of course, that is impossible as it is more than a month old. Needless to say, I will not waste my time talking to them anymore on this issue - if I hear back from them, I'll post again.

I'm having the same issue. I just went into the store and got a replacement nano 5g 16gb to see if my luck would change. Like if it happened to be a bad batch of ipods on the manufacturing side or if it's consistent across all of this generation.

The only thing that's changed since the last reply to this topic is itunes 10. Can anyone confirm if syncing with itunes 10 has made a difference in this problem? This is very annoying as I organize everything by playcounts and I travel a lot.

If I see this problem again within 2 weeks I'll get a refund and then downgrade to a 4g since this problem isn't existent in that generation (right?).

Hope apple acknowledges this is actually a problem and fixes it.

If it is the same problem as with the shuffle, it was introduced with some version of iTunes some time ago. It is unlikely to work better with old hardware. Nothing seems to be fixed in iTunes 10.

Hello everybody,

I just thought I should let you know that I have the same problem, but with the "rating" field. I manage manually the ipod, so I usually upload music, rate it and erase the ones I didn't like.

The problem is that after I have rated them while listening, if I connect the ipod to the PC and open itunes (the only way to delete them), rating changes I made are lost. So it is something similar to the "play counts" of the above messages.

Fortunately, doing what MVLaing suggested in a previous message helps also against this bug. After I listen a song in a playlist, I need to listen to another song from a different playlist. This is the only way that ratings are saved after I connect the ipod back to the PC.

Hope that "mighty" Apple will provide a solution to this annoyance.
Regards.

The problem went away for a while, but now that I upgraded to iTunes 10.0.1, it's back, and it's not random anymore: it happens every single day. Very frustrating. Everyone should realize, if you haven't figured it out already, that Apple does not monitor these forums. I heard it directly from an Apple tech during one of my many phone calls to attempt to (and fail to) fix sundry iPod issues. Thinking about getting a 6G Nano to see if it works any better.
