802.11n connected at 144mbps but copying files over network is slow

Hey guys, hoping someone might be able to enlighten me about this network problem I've been having here...

Got myself a 802.11n router (WRT160nV3 - tried standard firmware, now running open-source DDWRT firmware). According to Network Utility, my MacBook pro connects to my router with a good, 144mbps connection (and all bars are black on the AirPort signal strength icon - I'm sat about 2m away from the router in the same room).

However, when copying files to/from my networked Windows XP shares, I get speeds of around 1.5MB/s (megabytes/sec). When I connect my Macbook Pro to the router via an Ethernet cable, I get a solid 9-10 MB/s speed so not a problem on the XP side.

Anyone able to help me out here, or give me an idea of what to explore? I'm at my wits end here now!

Thanks very much!

Alex

Thanks, but my ethernet is 100 megabit, not gigabit, and so 802.11n should theoretically be faster than ethernet.

Edit: And also, even if it my ethernet were gigabit, one would expect faster speeds from a 144mbps connection than 1.5MB/s (i.e., approx 12mbps), my main concern is why is my wireless connection so slow, not why is my ethernet seven times faster. I just mentioned my ethernet connection speeds to show that the problem is purely with the wifi connection and not with the file server.

I had that same router and had tons of issues with wireless speed and resets. Do some searching online, it has a bad problem with overheating. If possible take it back and get an Airport Extreme. I bought one two weeks ago and I have had 0 issues. Its more expensive but as they say u get what u pay for. The USB sharing is nice too.

Also, that linksys router is not dual band and all the ports on it are Gb.

Kappy: I think it's only 100mbps because Network Utility says 100mbps, and the router is (to the best of my knowledge) only 100mbps.

mindaugas: Thanks for the reply. I dont think the ports on it are gigabit as you said (source: http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/linksys-wrt160n/4505-3319_7-32815481.html "The Linksys WRT160N doesn't support the faster Gigabit standard for wired connection, nor does it have USB support"). Anyway, don't think it's overheating, since I'm not having any problem with resetting or dropped connections, just slow. Still, I'm starting to think it can't be much else other than a problem with the router somewhere. Taking it back isn't an option, but maybe I'll stick with it as long as possible and get a better router soon.

Just a thought, could this be anything to do with 802.11g devices connecting to the router as well? Or does this not matter? (Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm no networking expert)

yer right, sry I misread yer post and thought it was wrt300. u prob don't have any of the problems I stated either. if you have a 5GHz option on that router try that but even 100Mbs is going to be faster over wired. Do your own tests, you'll find its true. I forget the technical details but I have never had better transfer speeds over wireless regardless of speed.
