The iPhone is available in 34 countries and 60 network operators across Europe, who all offer hugely differing voice and data plans, some limited and some unlimited.

So, although there are people on limited data plans (the ones who want to limit their use), it is not true to say +"In Europe people can only get limited data plans"+ - it varies from country to country and operator to operator.

**i would want an FM receiver in my iphone. i wouldnt care about having headphones in to listen to it. who wants to hear other people talking when you are listening to the radio.*
*i dont believe for 1 second that the iphone cant have an FM receiver enabled and that you could listen to it via the loudspeaker.*

*this has been a very interesting 1 sided discussion though. im glad the american stereotype doesnt shine through at all in this thread! **

As a Canadian, let me add my 2 cents here:

People like you are the bane of my existance. Please define why you want an iPhone without a data plan. It's like putting a lawnmower engine in a race car: yeah, it'll go, but not perform for the reason it was built.

If you are going to complain about a "lack" of a "simple" feature, can't you see that FM radio has been around for YEARS?! and have you ever heard how crisp and clean Internet transmissions of those same stations are? (I hook up my Corus Radio application to the Aux jack in my car for FM radio because it's clearer than the OTA signal)

Don't complain about a device that is BUILT to use INTERNET. If you are too cheap to pay for a data plan, don't spin that around to being Apple's fault. IMHO, if you can afford to buy an iPhone, you can afford a small data plan.

Juit being so whiny. Get a data plan. If you don't, go buy an iPod Touch.

well done genius, you have made a very valid point.
at no point did i say that i did not want a data plan with my iphone. i have an unlimited data plan and no problem with that. i would like an FM radio because it is useful!
old technology? so what? the internal combustion engine is getting on a bit now but is still pretty useful.
internet radio is fine when you have an internet connection. FM radio can be picked up almost anywhere here in the UK, thats quite handy.

people like YOU are the bane of MY life because you are clearly stupid. a simple piece of reading would have seen you avoid this silly mistake.

I thought that FM stations are going to all be turned off here in the UK in a few years time ? Once the analogue TV station changeover is complete its the turn of the radio - so having an FM radio isn't going to be much use.

Slightly more worrying for car owners with integrated radio's though !

So where do you go in the UK with your iPhone that has no internet connection (and no phone cell service)? What else do you do with your phone without cell service or WiFi? As you have an unlimited data plan, that's not the issue, right?

There's no doubt that a lot of people would "like" and find "useful" FM radio on their phone. At least as many, probably more, want Flash. In both cases, Apple decided on "superior" substitutes - internet radio and HTML5. Don't hold your breath for either.

Well I don't actually get a celluar or wi fi signal in my work office thank you very much. I also go to alot of sites where phone reception is poor or non existant.
FM radio reception is available nearly everywhere. My iPhone becomes my iPod in the office.
I have said that I would like the iPhone to have an FM radio. I'm not going to lose any sleep over not having it, it would just be nice.
Also as I have already mentioned I have no issues with my data plan. It's not me being tight.
I also believe the fact that it won't happen. I think the main arguemnt here has been COULD it happen not WILL it happen.
I firmly believe that apple could incorporate an FM radio. They obviously don't want to.

You listen to radio with a headset while working in your office? You must do something that doesn't require interaction with others or critical mental focus...
I also go to alot of sites where phone reception is poor or non existant.

If you really spent that much time in locations without cell service or data access, why carry an iPhone at all? Why not carry one of the myriad of MP3 players with FM, or a dedicated FM radio if you're not interested in MP3 music?
I think the main arguemnt here has been COULD it happen not WILL it happen.

Where did you see anyone assert that Apple couldn't add an FM radio receiver in the iPhone? This entire thread has been about the possible reasons whey they chose not to.

This is where I point out the fourth post you made in this thread where you stated:

"(blah blah) benefit from new features? An FM tuner isn't one of them for actual technical reasons, not personal interest or taste."

So, in fact it was you who asserted that Apple "couldn't add an FM radio" for actual technical reasons...

D'Oh! 😉

I write and commission software for a living. I don't always want to hear people talking crap in the background. Headphones solve this problem. I use the headphones that came with my iPhone,as apple intended using this as an aerial would be no big deal.
I commission software on sites which can be noisy, so I have to use my headphones to listen to music.
Are you saying that there is phone reception all over america?in every single place?
I work in some places where no phones get reception. I have an iPhone because I like it.
I do have a portable FM radio for the times I want and can listen to the radio. But it's another item to carry about.

Jan 28, 2010 11:33 AM in response to Julian Wright

Julian, maybe you should engage in more critical re-reading. They "technical reasons" are reasons they chose not to include FM - no Bluetooth headset, no speaker, requirement for wired headset to serve as antenna. Apple still could include an FM receiver if they choose to ignore those priorities. I never said otherwise.

And, the correct spelling is "doh!" (Oxford Dictionary of English)
