I've been told that I need to set up an IP address for my mac mini which will allow me to get my wireless extender working. Is this correct and how can I do it?
You should already have an IP address assigned by your Router. Go to System Preferences, click on the network icon> The pane on the left side of the window shows all your available connections. Yours should show "Ethernet-Connected". Your IP address is in the main window and should look something like this: 192.168.?.?, with the ? marks representing the IP numbers assigned by your router.
The problem with this mac is that it's airport doesn't have the range to connect to the router so I'm trying to set up the wireless extender.
When I click onto Built-in Ethernet or Airport in the Network status I can see an IP address there. Is it likely that this IP would have been set up by a previous router?
Yes I did take it downstairs to connect previously. Upstairs, it does occasionally show the signal for the Home Hub in the airport but has an error when trying to join the network.
Then that ip address was assigned by your router. Not all extenders work with all routers. You need to check for compatibility issues with the maker of your router.
So to confirm, the IP for my mac should be the one under Built-in Ethernet even though it is no longer connected by ethernet? When I click to other networks such as Airport there are different IP addresses.
well I thought it had an IP assigned but in fact there was nothing there. So I took my mac mini downstairs and next to the Home Hub, connected to the net and was given an IP under the TCP/IP section in Airport. Taking this back upstairs the IP number disappeared along with the subnet mask and router number.
Do I go with the number that was assigned downstairs?
