Picture quality from APP TV

Hi All

I am new to the APP TV (160GB V3) and I have to say i'm loving it so far!! I have a slight issue in the quality of the picture.

I have it connected to my Tosh full 1080p via hdmi and have selected a resolution of 1080p on the APP TV but I find when watchin film previews they appear a little bit dark?

For example when I watch the same trailer eg Star Trek from itunes on the APP TV and watch the same trailer on my 360 i can see a clear difference in quality and the APP TV is much darker. I think the 360 version is in HD and not sure about the itunes but it doesn't look HD? I noticed that it generally tells you if its in HD in itunes but not sure when you select "watch preview"? Pretty sure its in SD?

I have mirrored all the picture setting between the HDMI ports on my TV so i'm happy its not the TV side.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this? I can't seem to find ANY contrast setting in the APP TV within the menu's??

couple of things to note.
the appletv only supports up to 720p for HD playback, the 1080p setting you saw is for upscaling only (and your TV may be better at upscaling than the appletv).

the HD trailers (i assume it was the HD version you viewed and not the SD version - it would have give you 2 options if it did have an HD version) are not comparible to the actual movie (some have noticed they are of lower quality).

thanks for the info, i did read that the app tv only supported 720p and was quite surprised to see 1080p in the resolution list!

yeah i always look for the hd logo when viewing anything on itunes and its nice and clear sometimes "view in hd" and i am pretty sure the "watch preview" is just sd.

i haven't got round to renting any movies yet but watching for example the avatar hd trailer it looks poretty good and certainly on par with sky hd which i know is 1080i 🙂

do you think the app tv will be able to support 1080p streaming? would be nice but i don't think the difference between 1080 & 720 is hugely noticable to the untrained eye?!

Try cycling through HDMI Preferences in video settings and compare RGB High/Low.

You may have simply optimized your TV to the XBox output and could achieve the same for AppleTV by adjusting TV but then XBox would be wrong - trouble is, which is correct!

yeah thats a fair point and i will def look at that. i did originally mirror the tv settings from sky hd box but will have another play when the wife goes to bed!!

no, the appletv does not support 1080p playback in any form. the hardware is not capable.

guys thanks for your responses i have now resolved it and i hold my hands up it was my mistake and a stupid one!

when i was setting the tv picture i wasn't upping the brightness anywhere near to where it should have been and was using my settings for sky hd and xbox 360 as a guide!

oh well live and learn and thanks for your respones i have now set the resolution to 720p and not 1080p
