Java commands hang in Terminal

I recently tried for the first time to invoke Java from the command line. I entered the following command at the command prompt

java -version

and the command hung. No output, no command prompt. I killed the command with control-c and tried javac -version instead. Same result. I'm running Mac OSX 10.5.8 with the very latest updates. Please help!

I looked at this since a web page tells me java isn't installed.

In terminal I tried just java and got back the normal list of attributes
then:

java -version
java version "1.5.0_22"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_22-b03-333-9M3125)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_22-147, mixed mode, sharing)

so it does work.

Run Java Preferences in Applications / Utilities. What does it say? In the General tab, click both Restore Defaults buttons and try again.
