g3 to g4 upgrade

I have a pismo 400 running great for more than 5 years. I have read good reviews of the daystar g4 550 Mhz upgrade but I haven't seen any reviews of the Fastmac similar product. Any thoughts on the advantage of either of these or if the upgrade is worth it at all.

thanks

FastMac gave me great service and it's humming along nicely here. The biggest advantage of FastMac is zero downtime, they only require you to send them a processor card which for me (in the UK) was the closer. I was able to buy a cheap 400Mhz card on eBay and send it to the US without losing any use. They are cheaper as well...............

The FastMac upgrade does require you to do the installation yourself of course, so if you're not comfortable with it go for Daystar.

Reviews can be found <A HREF="http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/cpureview.lasso>here</A> by entering " Powerbook G3 2000 Rage128" and "other" in the manufacturer.

I find performance in Altivec apps to be massively better, my iTunes encoding doubled for example. In general use you won't notice a massive difference - most operations are dependant on processor SPEED and as 550Mhz is the fastest G4 that will fit it only gives a 10% overall speed increase. For all Altivec apps (which includes the Finder these days) you will see the difference, in fact I was able to get better results in xBench than a standard G4 PowerMac 800Mhz after all my upgrades.

Heat does increase somewhat, you've probably never heard the fan on your 400, you will with the G4 - although I must say that it's probably a bit cooler than my 500 G3 was, as I get less fan action than I did before even with 1GB RAM, etc.

I don't regret it at all but it may not be the right time now, with Apple committed to Intel for the future it may be better to save for a new 'Book. You'll still be stuck with your ancient graphics card and older technology screen so unless you REALLY love that Mac I'd say no at this point.

Hi Stephen,
I have the Daystar 550 G4 upgrade. I did this a year ago and haven't looked back since. Best thing i ever did... It definitely gets hot and the fan comes on with data intensive programs: Photoshop; iDVD; Classic Programs; Burning long DVD or CD; Virtual PC; etc. It takes awhile and it will come on.
As for sending in your computer to Daystar, that has changed. Check out their website: http://www.daystartechnology.com
Also, i agree with the other poster... check out refurb Powerbooks from Apple as the days of these machines are coming to a Classic close and for the $$ spent upgrading you might do better in selling the Pismo and grabbing an iBook if you don't need a PCMCIA slot etc, etc. Happy Hunting!
Good Luck.

I purchased the Wegener Media G4/550 upgrade a few months ago, and it's definitely extended the useful life of my Pismo when compared to the G3/400 I used to have under the hood. The installation is very easy and only took about 15 minutes, start to finish.

I'm very pleased with it. I love the feel of my Pismo and the versatility the expansion bays give me. This upgrade, as well as adding RAM and a larger, 5400 RPM hard drive with 16 MB of cache, is keeping this machine very capable even today. Now if only we could upgrade the video...

Hi - I had Daystar upgrade my 500MHZ G3 Pismo to 550 G4. Aside from adding memory, it was one of the best upgrades for my Pismo. One of the other responses suggested saving your money and going for an iBook. I disagree. I currently have a friends iBook that will be going to eBay. It's a G3 iBook with a 600MHZ CPU, with 384 RAM. Compared to my G4 Pismo, it is s-l-o-w. Not to mention the ports you'll be loosing. The Pismo was the last of its' kind. Definately worth keeping...and upgrading. I'd go with Daystar if I had to do it over again.
