Macbook First Gen, Mac OS X (10.6.2)
...allswell.. funny w/ tv remote..go figure..
...so the drive is just "wear n tear" ?..is it worth replacing the drive ?
...granted, its pretty old.. it acted up once since i stripped it down and refilling.. i then went and deleted the few tracks that squeaked on w/ that particular band before it cut out, waited for a 'cooldown' and we're on our way again... i give it a full min to 'breathe' after an upload.. and a few min after a handful of uploads... sometimes it has a clicking/ grind noise when its working away and does it consecutively about 20sec after each upload completion...
My iPhone sometimes blocks my wireless mouse and/or keyboard for several seconds at random intervals when they're close together.
As to the drive, yes, probably wear'n'tear assuming you've ruled out other issues.

I don't really understand the stats, would you mind telling me if mine is ok?
Retracts: 27
Reallocs:104
Pending Sectors:1
PowerOn Hours: 29
Start/Stops: 32
Temp: 33c
Temp: Min 21c
Temp: Max 46c
That one pending sector represents a known bad chunk of the hard drive that has yet to be swapped out. As long as the iPod doesn't try to read from it everything is OK, but if it does the iPod may freeze up, skip to another song or reset. It is more of a problem if that sector stores part of a folder or the iPod's media database. The DFU restore process should free up the pending sector, converting it to a realloc, and let you restore the media to the device.

Judging by the answers you've provided to other users, I think I know my answer, but I just wanted to ask you as well. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes several times, and everytime I try to load music to my iPod, it freezes. Here are my results:
Retracts: 2
Rallocs: 2792
Pending Sectors: 0
Poweron Hours: 679
Start/Stops: 16758
Temp: Current 34c
Temp: Min 65c
Temp: Max 241c
It's toast, isn't it?
It doesn't look good, but you could try a DFU restore and the "break up large transfers" method from Corrupt iPod classic.

Hi, good day! I'm quite depressed with what happened to my iPod classic. It's now corrupted; all media and files were wiped out and it says 0kb free memory (all stored under "Other") 😟 I've tried the Diagnostic Mode you suggested and my results are as follows:
Retracts: 4
Reallocs: 232
Pending Sectors: 104
PowerOn Hours: 591
Start/Stops: 13458
Temp: Current 30c
Temp: Min 14c
Temp: Max 52c
I haven't tried Restoring or Reformatting my device as I'm scared of what might happen. However, I did restart/reset it and it still displays the same condition. Please help me, thank you very much. 🙂
Dear Shroomshady,
If you read this, would you please share the message you sent to the custumor service? Clearly you pulled the right triggers.
Thanks in advance
Hey,
I've had this problem for a few months now and every attempt I've made and every discussion there seems to be no solution to this. I generally believe its a fault Apple had used to remove the ipod classic range. I've updated my itunes to the newest version, erased and re formatted my 80GB classic and every time it still crashes and drains the battery way too fast. When it does work prob 3 out of 10, it crashes and won't sync with itunes when I re-connect it. In short I've stopped using the classic due to the reliability and problems it caused for me. I've read over 15 threads about this problem and most problems do appear in each one...
See Corrupt iPod classic. What are the stats like? If the HDD surface has errors the device is likely to take multiple goes at reading data using more energy even when successful, and when unsuccessful liable to crash. All hard drives ultimately fail, and the forums are mainly used by people having problems so I don't think you should read too much into that.

The most likely cause is a hard drive that has become faulty. For "classic" iPods that use hard drives for storage, the hard drive is the most common failure point, because it is a delicate part that eventually fails, even in computers that are stationary when in use. It is NOT some "conspiracy" by Apple. I have an ancient 3rd gen "classic" iPod from 2003 that connects using FireWire (not USB) and it works fine with the latest iTunes 12.
Apple sold essentially the same hardware design as the model named "iPod classic" for many years, until recently. They all used hard drives for storage. An iPod classic ("6th gen") can be more than 7 years old, or as new as a few months ("7th gen"). The average age of an iPod classic is getting higher every day. Therefore, due to this "aging," there will be more and more reported failures of this type over time. No one should be surprised...
If you use an iPod classic and its hard drive becomes faulty, you can consider giving it a flash-based "upgrade." Here's some interesting info on the topic.

My (other) "classic" iPod is 4th gen (with B/W screen), not a later "iPod classic." Its hard drive was replaced with a 64GB compact flash card, using a "generic" adapter I bought on eBay. It is a better device now than when it was new, because it no longer uses a hard drive for storage. It's less delicate. It's noticeably lighter. It's more power efficient. It does not vibrate or hum. And there is no hard drive spin-up delay. This web page has illustrated repair guides

and there are also numerous YouTube videos on taking iPods apart.
Hi Kenichi Watanabe,
Thanks for your info, it's been quite helpful. I recently visited my local Apple store and was told it was pretty much gone but with your new info I may revive my ipod.
I used to be able to sync my ipod classic 80gb then it just stopped putting all of my collection on it and puts only part of it; so frustrating,. Now when i hook it up, it recognizes it on macbook pro and itunes but wont sync; says there is an error. 😠. It has basically been happening for a couple of years now. Ive been to Apple store and spoke with Apple IT for hours and days and to no evail and no one can help me. I even purchased a new 80 gb classic and it did the same thing so I returned it. Im leary about getting a ipod touch in fear it will do same thing.
See Corrupt iPod classic. What do the stats look like?
