iPod not Recognized by Windows 7

I got a new Dell desktop and after installing iTunes, the iPod will not be recognized by either iTunes nor Windows. The device manager does show an iPod device but it has an exclamation mark on it. Click on properties tells me that the device driver has not been found. Automatically scanning for a new driver results in nothing being found.

Connecting the iPod to my other Win XP machine works fine.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and all other Apple software and that has had no effect.

Does anyone know how to fix?

I found a driver problem with my printer. I reinstalled the relevant software and the printer driver problem is no longer there.

After running sfc I get the following:

2010-01-26 12:18:07, Info CSI 00000124 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:20{10}]"tcpmon.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Printing-StandardPortMonitor-TCPMonINI, Version = 6.1.7600.16385, pA = PROCESSOR ARCHITECTUREAMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

That one might be a relatively innocent byproduct of the printer driver software. Can't tell for sure, but from what I can gather from web research some printer software may alter the ini to add more printer models ... producing the mismatch when doing the sfc /scannow.

What make and model of KVM switch are you using?

Here's something else that's pretty strange.

I installed Windows XP mode and then installed iTunes in the VM. I can attach the iPod to the XP virtual machine and iTunes recognizes it without a hitch!

I think I can copy my music to a folder on my desktop and point the VM iTunes library to this folder.

To be continued tomorrow...

I spent about 1 hour on the phone with Dell technical support. They could not figure it out either. They recommended I return the desktop. I wasn't too happy to go through that hassle.

I decided to reinstall Windows 7. Works like a charm now! I think some of the Dell installed programs must have messed something up.

hey ice, i just about to reinstall my windows 7 as well, i have all kind of funny things happening over adn over again.
are you using the recovery disc or the recovery folder in your hd which dell preloaded for your own copy. did you just do a repair or install a fresh copy of the windows 7. what did you do with your music folder and other programs and file? how much time you just spend to have the computer up on running again?

I used the recovery disk and did a fresh install. I thought all my music was going to be overwritten but was did not. However, I do not keep my music in the 'My Music' folder, I keep it another folder on the C drive. If you can, I would back it up to an external drive, just in case.

For all my other files in My Documents, I copied them into a CD. All files in My Documents were erased. Also, everything was erased from Firefox (bookmarks, passwords) since I had to reinstall.

The Win 7 setup says it takes about 2-3 hours to install but mine was done in under 30 minutes. I have a 2.5 GHz with 8 GB RAM, your mileage may vary.
