New Wireless Keyboard Keeps Draining Battery

I have read that the old (3 battery) wireless keyboards keep draining on users with the new magic mouse. I went ahead and ordered the new (2 battery) wireless keyboard reading that this new keyboard was not affected. I am having the same problem as I was with my old wireless keyboard. Anyone else dealing with this? I am going through batteries about once a week. At least now its 2 batteries instead of 3.

Welcome to the Discussions forums.

Perhaps the answer may be in other threads with the same topic. If the new keyboard is draining so quickly that is very unusual though. I wonder if there's other bluetooth devices nearby that may be causing some interference. Have you checked your System Preferences / Bluetooth and System Preferences / Keyboard to see if there's anything unusual? You may be able to save some battery power if "Discoverable" is turned off, but I have it turned on and don't have a keyboard problem (but the Magic mouse likes to drain the batteries of course). For that reason I bought NiMH rechargeable batteries.

If you don't have other bluetooth devices and everything seems normal, what batteries are you putting in the device? Just speculating but if they were dirt cheap, they may be old or voltage too low or amperes too weak. If they are quality batteries, then you could conclude your keyboard is defective and call Apple.

Hello M:

Welcome to Apple discussions.

It is stating the obvious, but battery usage is a function of the usage and hardware. No generalization is accurate.

As a suggestion (one that I make often in the Bluetooth forum), use rechargeable batteries. They last an even shorter period than Lithium ones, but that is irrelevant. I use 2650 mAh Duracells (I have a lot) and a 15 minute Duracell charger all obtained new on eBay at a reasonable cost). In that way, I am never more than15 minutes from "new" batteries. As a plus, that approach is environmentally friendly.
