Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

.....the A4.....can deliver more than the AppleTv processor....

I'm surprised that the January Big Event involved nothing more than the iPod jumbo. If they can squeeze that much hardware into the iJumbo, you'd think they could have released a better ATV. No other new hardware, no new software, no changes to iTunes. Did I miss something?

I just read some technical information on the A4 processor and it's actually a system on a chip (SOC), with the CPU, graphics processor, and memory manager all integrated onto a single chip. That may explain the tablet's resolution and why it doesn't do 720p out by cable. The graphics processor is probably too limited in performance, thus wouldn't be suitable for an ATV. I think the ATV needs a truly discreet GPU, but with media reports always suggesting it's not selling well, I'd say the future looks bleak.

One of my friends and I were talking about how televisions will likely in the future be just another network device in the home. My reasoning was that with the proliferation of wifi tech, there's no reason NOT to put wifi in a new TV.

Televisions already have the hardware to decode various types of audio/visual signals, how much more difficult would it be to engineer their systems to decode mp4's, avi's, etc. You'd just have to set up a shared directory on your system somewhere that the TV could access and voila. You wouldn't even need an AppleTV or other device (Boxee, WD, etc.) any more to output content to a monitor.

That being said, I don't think that there is going to be an AppleTV v2.0. I think the best we can hope for is incremental upgrades to the official OS, and maybe using the 3rd party hacks for more versatility if need be.

Some new TVs sold in Japan already include the hardware and software for streaming HD video with surround sound from some of the VOD services there as well as directly from the Internet. I expect there will be TVs sold in the U.S. in the near future that can do Netflix.

Content availability and pricing remain the biggest problems in Japan, however. Sony charges a whopping $9.00 per episode for download purchase of SD TV shows from the PlayStation Store there, compared to $3.00 per episode for HD episodes in the U.S. iTunes store.

Unfortunately, I don't think there are any potential future OS upgrades for the ATV that will significantly improve its performance, as I believe its fundamental deficiencies are hardware related.

WAIT WHAT ABOUT USING THE IPAD AS A SECONDARY SCREEN???
Here's what i want:
MacMini
Cintiq for drawing
IPAD???

1. Can it be used as extra screen space for the Mini? Will it function as a second monitor with touch screen functions?
2. Can i switch between viewing the mini's desktop and iPad interface? Meaning the monitor is activated via an App program?
3. Can it be done wirelessly?

If you said yes, what are you doing? You just got a freebie great idea to make a whoopload of money. Go do it! And sell it to me and every other coffee shop artist who wants to be free of the awkward shape and fragility of a laptop.
