Freezing after sleep

Hey Folks

My 3 week old MBP running the latest versions of Snow keeps freezing. I shut the lid, put it away and when I open it again, it's stuck where I left it. Clock has stopped, no response. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button to force it off then restart.

Anyone else having this issue? Any solution?

Ugh!

Feb 5, 2010 1:18 PM in response to Timothy B Hewitt

OK. I see there at "Feb 5 03:18:46" a startup begins, and at "Feb 5 03:19:11" there is an "Improper Shutdown Detected." That's where OS X notices that it got forced to shut down last time.

There are references to "rogueamoeba" which is a great Mac software company, so that's a clue. At "Feb 5 03:29:08" there is a reference to Soundflower. I guess around ten seconds after startup, OS X tries to load the Soundflower kernel extension. Now here's the thing: Third-party kernel extensions are "the usual suspects" when the system becomes unstable.

I believe that you installed a Rogue Amoeba application like Audio Hijack. Nothing wrong with that, I love that program. But the Soundflower kernel extension may have been installed as part of that. Soundflower is reputable and in wide use, but what I would watch out for is the version. Make sure Soundflower is the Snow Leopard compatible version which according to Google only came out a few months ago. Personally, I chose to not install Soundflower because I didn't need the feature it adds to Audio Hijack and I try to avoid kernel extensions.

I forget how to turn off Soundflower, but I think it involves going to System Prefs and using Application Enhancer or something. I'm not saying I know that's the cause, but it's something to try.

You also have a SnapzProX kernel extension loading, but I have that too and it hasn't caused problems in Snow Leopard for me.

Feb 5, 2010 4:51 PM in response to Network 23

Thanks N23

Lots of good info there - I do have Audio Hijack and SnapzProX installed. I don't know if I went with the SoundFlower option, but I'll have a look.

This didn't take long.

Application Enhancer's pref pane just did 2 things - 1st click on it gives a message that says 'To use the “Application Enhancer” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.'

I click it and then the top of sys prefs says 'Loading Application... 32 bit' and then Sys Prefs crashes.

That seems like a good clue.

Thoughts?

Well, I uninstalled Application Enhancer. Seems it's not SL safe:
http://unsanity.com/haxies/ape

Or maybe it's Stephen Colbert's fault - He is quite distracting:
New in version 2.5.2:
* Now works on G3s again.
* Attempts to register the APE Launcher app with LaunchServices on install.
* Compiled while the Colbert Report was on.

I'll see if this changes anything.

Yeah... But I've been down that road before - Re-install your system - Remove all 3rd party apps - Waste a bunch of time before they will help you - Plus they treat you like a newbie... I get it, they have a script to go through with everyone.

So I ask here hoping someone else has solved the problem and can share. Folks have been very kind in looking at my system logs. Plus, the problem has gotten 'better' but 'different'. I'll take a few more swings at this before calling Apple.

The regular shutdowns when changing power state are a bit of a worry here, Timothy, and may well indicate a hardware issue, especially on a newish machine. If you don't want to use the Apple phone service how about taking it to a local AASP?

I know you've already reset your SMC, but I'd try it again as a first step.

After that, I'm afraid I'd be working through much the same script as the one the phone service would probably provide you.

Do you have a backup on an external drive? First up I'd be either cloning to an external, wiping the internal , re-installing a clean copy of the OS, or alternatively installing a "clean" copy of the OS on the external, and seeing if the problem persists, when I boot from the "clean" copy. If so , you can be pretty certain it is a hardware issue. You might also try running AHT (either from the internal drive, if it is still installed on the internal, or from the second of the discs that came with computer - the one with the "applications" on).

Cheers

Rod

Thanks Rod

After having another shut-down, I guess that I'm out of luck for an 'easy' fix.

Thanks for all of you input and time. I'll reset the SMC, do a full repair and zap the pram - If it happens again, I'll have to get on the phone.

It's a drag as this is only 4 weeks old and it started then with a clean install. Then I used migration assistant to import (from the previous macbook).

I'll follow your advice and back this thing up. Now, where's my firewire adaptor?...

Just to keep all in the know - In case this happens to you:

After a call to Apple, they had a look at my system log. It seems the system was unmounting itself at every sleep. We removed 2 files from
macintosh hd > library > preferences > systemconfiguration
1 - com.apple.powermanagement.plist
2 - same name with a ~ or 2 at the end (it also contained powermanagement

It's been running fine. If it locks up again I'll post an update.

Hope this helps someone.
