Simple server issues - novice

I purchased a Mac Mini (1.1) on ebay with OS X server to use primarily as a file server in a home environment, primarily for music, video and iPhoto files. The server is also running Squeezebox in the background. Probably overkill for my needs, but certainly should be functional. To maximize speed, I modified the mini by attaching a cable to the internal sata port (in place of the HD) and hooking to an external 1.5 TB eSATA drive (enclosed in a Rosewill RX81-MP-SC- SLV). Icreated two partitions on the external drive, one with the system files and one with the data to be shared. I also have a second 1.5 TB drive connected via the FW400 port on the mini.

The system is configured and seems to run fine for awhile, then it crashes. The clients that are mounted lose the shared partition from the server. Attempts to access other files on the server fail (although generally the server can still be seen from the finder). Looking at the server itself, the screen is frozen and the mini needs to be rebooted. I am not sure what has happened, nor what the cause is. It seems that 36-72 hours go by without incident, then I crash.

I have now swapped the two external disks. I have the startup volume (the 2 partition disk) connected FW400 and the other disk connected eSATA. This is not ideal (defeats my reason for going SATA in the first place) but I have not crashed for 12 hours now. Time will tell if making the start-up SATA is a problem (my drive enclosure uses the Oxford 934 chipset).

Only other information I can give is from the logs on the server. It is clear that some things are going on that should not be, but I doubt those are the issue:

Hi

Experience same crash behavior of 10.6 server on my Mac Mini with DataBox connected containing all kind of data, except the system software which is installed on the internal hard drive. All my shared volumes, about 10, generating more or less regular (about every 30 minutes) the server preferences to crash.

The two entries in the console log are always to same for all shared volumes I have:
19.02.10 00:07:18 Server Preferences[53715] XSActionManager: Removing queued action (Zugriffsrechte lesen) due to coalescing (readSettings path/Volumes/DataBox 2/Dumy)

19.02.10 00:07:18 Server Preferences[53715] The shared folder 'Dumy' has custom file system ACLs which cannot be displayed. Editing the permissions may replace any custom ACLs.

Once a day, the console log shows for all services running on the server:

19.02.10 05:37:17 Server Preferences[53715] Error: The server 'Dumy.com' reported an error while processing a command of type: 'readSettings' in plug-in: 'servermgr_accounts'. Error: Error Domain=XSActionErrorDomain Code=408 UserInfo=0x107e2c650 "A network error occurred"

Did anybody have a good idea how to overcome this and how to decode the "UserInfo=0x107e2c650"

Thanks for taking care.

Thomas

Add me to the list. This is killing our Xserve every couple of days.

for logcompressor.sh entries, you can disable the launchd process that's calling it via:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.wikid.logcompressor.plist

I don't appear to have the logcompressor.sh on my system either.

As for the junkmail log entry, see the Mail Service Admin guide - http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/documentation.html

If you're running mailservices you'll want to setup junkmail (and notjunkmail) *local node* user accounts.
Test things out by running

sudo /etc/mail/spamassassin/learn junkmail -d

Hey thanks for the heads up on this!

We are running 3 Xserves all setup slightly differently and connected to an AD environment in the golden triangle config. All three would randomly crash with no reason but all showed the logcompressor as one of the last entries in the console. We've applied this fix to all three of the Xserves and will report back in two weeks or so to let you all know if it fixed our issues permanently.

For the record we modified the logcompressor.plist file as well as performed an unload on the launch daemon.

I'm curious if 10.6.4 fixes this.

Thanks!
