MobileSync Folder in Application Support?

I have found a rather larger MobileSync folder in my application support folder. Is this my iPhone's backup that iTunes uses to restore?

If I remember correctly iTunes used to store all of the software updates along with the backups in the Music folder, iTunes folder. Is this something that has been changed recently?

Any help would be great. Thanks

Unfortunately, I had no luck substituting the Backup folder with an alias. iTunes couldn't back up my devices; there was an error. Instead, I've just moved my backups to another folder on an external hard drive, and I'm leaving them there until I need them again. I've left the Backup alias in my MobileSync folder, but renamed it Stored Backup so that it wouldn't interfere with iTunes, but would still be in a convenient location.

I would recommend that anyone who wants to keep their old backups do this.
