Wi-fi issues with new 3.1.3 update

If you look up the thread a few messages you will find someone who downgraded to 3.1.2 and it did not fix the problem, then upgraded again to 3.1.3 and the problem was resolved. There are also a lot of messages in the past complaining about this problem in 3.1.2, so it is very unlikely that it is a bug specifically in 3.1.3. It's much more likely that it is an artifact of installing firmware of whatever version.

I think i found solution for my problem after upgrade to 3.1.3.
It was encryption mode.
On my Access point with WPA-PSK iphone make connection to the wi-fi but cannot connect to web (the strange thing it's that it's possible to access to local device like AP or network printer)
So i configure it to WEP and now everything is OK.

Another test i done it was to turning on the mac filtering on the AP, but there was no way to let the iphone work.

I hope that will be an update soon... WEP it's not a really secure encription, it can be hacked in 5 min!

Although it got things working for you, that solution is not good enough, We shouldnt have to lower security in order to use the handset via wifi!

I dont think it would help me much anyway. I can connect and browse the web via my wifi fine - its just the speed is so slow that it makes iPlayer or Youtube videos unwatchable, as they just dont download. I should be able to use all features of my iPhone, like I paid for, rather then just the basics because of slow speed. In fact, I sometimes have to switch off wifi and watch Youtube videos via 3G, because its faster then wifi!

Before 3.1.3 I could achieve speeds of 7MB via wifi perfectly fine. This rules out my router being the issue - even though I am using WPA security. DHCP is handing out IP's perfectly fine - so no issues that end.

The issue is with the iPhone itself.

All yesterday evening I was getting speeds of under 0.10MB via my iPhone (I checked speeds via my laptop over wifi also to ensure my ISP was not at fault, and I got 10MB with the laptop - so ISP or router not the issue).

However, I got up this morning, and got a speed of 6MB via my iPhone again??!! I bet when I get home it will go back down to unusable. The speed just seems to fluctuate whenever it feels like it.

I am using a cable internet connection - so the contention ratio does not apply. I do not share my line so my speed is always a constant 10MB at all times of the day, whether its a busy period or not.

I am employed as a network engineer. I work with computer networks as a living. Ive ruled out all other possibilities. The issue lays with the iPhone itself, or the recent 3.1.3 update.

As a network engineer you should know that there is not a conventional contention ratio on cable, but you should also know that you are actually sharing - its just that you are on an ethernet style system with constant data rate, but actual throughput does vary as others use the same bandwidth, and you get packet collisions.

If you ran a speedtest, the line speed would be the same but the throughput rate would drop, unless you are lucky enough to be on a lightly used part of the network.

I'm getting sick of this issue.
0.03MB from a 10MB connection? It's so slow at even browsing web pages that I give up and use 3G instead!
I've had an Apple rep contact me for further information and phone logs etc but heard nothing back.
Come on Apple. Sort the issue out.

My iPhone 3G refuses to connect to any WLAN since the update to 3.1.3.
First, I cleared all the settings and caches, then I reinstalled 3.1.3 and at last, I downgraded to 3.1.2 and upgraded to 3.1.3 again.

Still, the Phone refuses to connect to any WLAN that worked flawlessly prior to the update.

Any clue anyone?

I may have an answer to this one and it may not be the iPhone at fault.

I use a Netgear WNDR3700 gateway router. Netgear have just posted a new firmware update that includes this fix

"•Fixed: “iPhone keeps asking for wireless passphrase” issue."

according to Netgear's FAQ for this firmware update.

So it may be worthwhile pestering your wireless provider for a fix too.

I tried everything. Setting up as new device, resetting everything - WLAN doesn't work. I tried 4 different routers for now with and without encryption. still no luck.

I think it is definately broken. What can I do? I'm out of normal warranty, but I think this is apple's fault ,but they don't offer me any senseful choice of contact on their website. Any hints?

My 3G wifi worked fine with 3.1.2 and before. After upgrading to 3.1.3 I get "Unable to join the network _" to any and all networks I try (not just my own home) even though I'm picking them all up with the wifi strengths I've been used to. So I'm confident it's not a router issue or an antenna issue. Tried the network settings reset that's been mentioned. No change.

Kind of wary about a restore being a big timewaster but I guess I have to.

The restore might work, but doubtful. The firmware has probably jacked up the WiFi until a new firmware is released.

Contact Apple at apple.com/feedback and let them know. if enough people contact them we hopefully will get a solution.

Same issue: upgraded to 3.1.3 and wifi now fails.

Tried "Reset Network Settings"; networks are
initially detected but immediately lost.

Tried "Restore" and "Set up as new"; networks are
initially detected, work briefly/sporadically
but are then lost.

Only solution: "out of warranty replacement"

I too had the same problem that a lot of people state - after the upgrade wifi was not working.
I could see and join the wifi network no problem but browsing the internet, etc. did not work.
I could turn off wifi and browse the internet via 3G no problem.
I reset the network settings but this did not work.
I released my DHCP address in the router and clicked renew on the phone and got an IP but browsing, etc. still did not work.
I set a static address in my iphone and everything works fine.

Those who are having a problem may want to try to set a static address in their iphone.

Apple says the failure of the "set up as new" procedure
unambiguously points to hardware failure. I am not sure
whether the upgraded firmware is down-rev'd in this
process (the phone still shows 3.1.3).

AT&T says its Apple's problem.

I've bought an iPhone 3GS/16 and I've got the sluggish wifi connection problem. At home I have a TimeCapsule as base station.

I've SOLVED the problem disabling the "anti-interference" feature of the TC (I guess any Airport base station has the same setting). That feature is accesible pushing the "advanced" settings button in the wireless tab.

At work I can hook to various wifi networks. Some of them have the issue, others don't. Anyway, I don't have any access to the settings of those routers, so I can do nothing at this time.

I have the same problem even after resetting the network 2 times. Does anyone have the answer? I could connect to my home wifi effortlessly before the upgrade.
I too get asked for a password. There has never been one assigned as my iphone always connected automatically. HELP!
