Q: Wi-fi issues with new 3.1.3 update

Hi. There is most definitely a problem for a lot of us. It is of course not necessary for people to tell us they had no problem (nor is it helpful).

There is a lot of chatter on the internet about this with suggestions for people to clear network settings (working for only some). Others suggest the static IP solution. Some reset network settings only to be given a greyed out wifi switch. Soft resets are suggested too.

I suspect this is something Apple is working on frantically, the only question is will they tell us how they're getting on?

I have the same problem after updating to 3.1.3 , please help this is a waste of time

If no change after any of the troubleshooting steps which in order are reset network settings on your iPhone, power your iPhone off and on, an iPhone reset, restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, and restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, you can call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

My iPhone has not been working since the last two firmware upgrades Thats nearly THREE MONTHS!!! I had hoped that v 3.1.3(7E18) would include a fix for this WiFi issue as well as patching security flaws in the OS.

I think that the amount of people with broken devices that have written in to get peer advice from other users warrants some kind of annuncement from Apple.
I have already written to a couple of journalists to try and escalate this to Apple.

Absolutely CONVINCED this is a software issue that relates to de-throttling the WiFi chip. Or my own pet theory that different, earlier batches of chip refuse to work with the software release hence seeing people with older phones suffer.
Putting the phone in the freezer is a crackpot scheme and it probably is the switching off and rebooting that is helping these users. I would defintiely not reccomend it.
I am so cheesed off with Apple, they should release a standalone installer to roll-back the operating system to an earlier version....

apple are a shower of w**king ba**ards, i have an early 16gb iphone and have not bein able to access wifi since i upgraded to 3.1.2 last year, and apple will not accept responsiblilty for it, they want over €200 to fix it, extreaml c**tish if u ask me!!!!!

same problem, here. i have 3 airports in my house -- plenty of coverage -- but as of OS 3.1.3, it no longer connects to wi-fi. it sees the network, but never connects. it's constantly on 3G, which of course drains the battery.

there's at least one other thread in this forum on the same topic. this is without question an OS 3.1.3 issue.

apple, please don't make us wait months for the fix. this is a serious issue!!

This is why you shouldn't bother with updates unless they provide us with something valuable. Yeah every update that apple releases says it will extend battery life blah blah blah..yeah right.

I'll stick with my 3.1.2 until they give me something I don't already have. Customizable lock pattern, background, different text tones, live weather updates without having to open up the weather application. So, every update that apple produces until then are worthless. So y'all shouldn't even update to save yourselves all the stress

just upgraded... no it refuses my sim card _ _" what a bULsit ...apple has neglected us as a customer...somebody should bring this matter to court .... Im in Indonesia, i bought my phone 2 wees ago, the wifi is abit trouble, but with wififum its solved...NOw, it rejected my sim card !!!!

In this thread you'll see that a very helpful lady from Apple Support by the name of Madeline was extremely helpful in passing this in to Apple Dev's who then appear to have sorted the Backup issues in later versions of the iPhone firmware. So I guess persistence does help and the 21,522 views that got Apple's attention.

Hope this WiFi issue gets the Apple Support attention it requires. In today's connected world there is nothing worse than bad publicity. Just ask Toyota!

Hi Goaliegeek, in my first reply I said I reset my Network Settings as described on Apples Network Troubleshoooter. I was on 3.1.2 at the time. After 2 days of rock solid stable WiFi connection at both home & work I took the plunge and upgrade to 3.1.3. I have to report that I've had no issues with 3.1.3 yet and my WiFi is still solid.

My guess about the iPhone WiFi setup is that it holds WiFi info in some memory registers and as time wears on they gradually fill up.

I think Apple Devs need to check this out and come up with a way of ensuring that those WiFi connections users use most often are protected and that those that are 'drive-by' are treated as temporary.

So that means permanent memory registers for permanent WiFi connections and temporary replaceable memory registers for street based WiFi from phone operators, etc. A method to easily clear a permanent entry would also be useful as the current "Forget this Network" appears to be broken.

personally, I think the whole "Reset Network" approach is a poor method and doesn't enhance the user experience.

Suggest Apple's Devs run up some usage scenarios and then code for the overall best user experience.

My iPhone is only a month old 32GB 3Gs. My wifi used to work perfectly fine with 3.1.2, but since upgrading to 3.1.3 the wifi is rubbish. This was my first update since having the phone, and I didnt think it would cause more problems then it would resolve!

I have a 10MB Internet connection via cable, so it is not shared.
On my laptop speedtest reports I'm getting the full 10MB.

On my iPhone I used to get between 6-8MB.
Since the recent 3.1.3 update I'm getting silly speeds via my iPhone speedtest.net app. It now reports around 0.3MB!

I can still browse the web ok but I can't watch any YouTube videos or iplayer etc.

If I switch to 3G it's actually better then my wifi and I can watch full YouTube videos without any stutter at all.

Why is my 10MB wifi connection so poor on my iPhone now?

I have tried a restore 3 times now.
The first time I thought things had improved, but a few hours later it was back to being rubbish again. The subsequent restores have made no improvements. I'm actually having to switch wifi off and revert to 3G to watch a YouTube video!
