I flashed my iPhone to 3.1.3 the other night and now have very poor battery life - the phone is mostly on standby all day (not even listening to music).
Phone completely discharged itself last night, on charge all night - will see how long it lasts today. Seriously thinking about downgrading firmware, battery life was acceptable with that version - used to have an hour of music on train, mostly standby all day (sometimes calls), and an hour of music/internet on way home - battery was fine.
A phone that won't last on standby for a working day is not much good to me.
Same problem here too... Upgraded to 3.1.3 yesterday. Re-calibrated the battery last night then let it charge overnight. I unplugged it this morning at 6:30 and it showed 100% charge.
Checked traffic and weather report on web. Played some music in the car for 30 minutes.
Now it is 9:00 AM and my battery is almost entirely drained already. Something is definitely wrong and it certainly isn't hardware.
Something is wrong, and it probably isn't hardware. Probably IS corrupted metadata, most likely in the email app or the network settings. Try Reset Network Settings. Then try deleting your email accounts, rebooting then adding them back. If neither of those fix it restore it and set up as a new phone. If that doesn't fix it the problem IS hardware; contact Apple for a repair or replacement. The Restore as New is what Apple will do before replacing it, so you haven't lost anything by trying.
No, no issues here - I wasn't having a problem before the update, and I still don't have an issue. You almost have to have a bad app - one that's staying active.
Try shutting the phone completely off - hold the top button down until the red slider pops up. Leave it off for a minute, and then turn it back on.
As for run time, all smart phones have a short run time - people are asking too much of them, and they are thinking that they should stay up like their old phones, like a Razr, or the like, should.
I'm getting what is advertised, and I have computed the usage based on the amount of time spent doing different things with the phone. Each app or function will have different consumption rates. If you play a lot of games, you'll drain the in short order. Push, fetch, sync intervals, etc will affect it as well.
It is working as it is supposed to, not how some folks want it to.

With all due respect, don't dismiss our problem just because it isn't happening to you... Yours may be working as it is supposed to but some of us are actually experiencing a marked decrease in perceived battery life since 3.1.3.
This is not a matter of unreasonable expectations. My phone went from 100% charge to automatic shutdown this morning in a matter of 3 hours with minimal usage.
I've already reset network settings, powered off, hard booted, soft booted, recalibrated, chanted praise to the iPhone deities in latin while spinning in my chair with my right hand on top of my head... Recalibrating again and crossing my fingers.

The problem is very real, but it is rare. That doesn't make it any less real and those of us who don't have the problem shouldn't gloat - our time will come.
But the fact that it IS rare means it is unlikely a flaw in 3.1.3; it is more likely something that got corrupted during the upgrade or restoring the backup to the phone. If some basic steps (reboot, reset network settings, deleting email accounts and recreating after a reboot) doesn't fix it the next step is to do a Restore in iTunes and set up as a new phone. This will almost certainly fix it; if it doesn't Apple will replace the phone.
I just updated to 3.1.3 this morning. My phone is only 1 month old and had been working perfectly
An hour ago it became unusually warm and the battery quickly ran down and died. I wasn't using the phone it was just in my pocket. I have made no calls today and have not been using any apps. I started the day with a full charge.

I was updated on 3.1.3 - the battery has sat down very quickly, for a night (in an expectation mode) on 9 %, on 3.1.2 - 2 %.

the problem is not with v 3.1.3. My battery life has improved with the update, and many other people have reported the same improvement. If your battery life is worse either there was a problem with the update or you have bad data in one or more of the apps, probably the mail app. First drain the battery until the phone shuts off, then recharge for 4 hours. Test again. If this does not fix it do a reboot.
If it still has worse battery life delete your email accounts, reboot, then add them back.
If it still is not fixed restore the phone as a new phone without reloading your backup.
Decreased battery life.
Increased call failure (About a dozen a day).
My battery life has always been poor. I have my brightness at like 25%, only text messaging sounds are enabled, fetch data every hour for mail, zero notifications are enabled and I think I probably use the phone as much as the average person does.
Just something I have to live with I suppose. Battery life just seems to be awful on this phone. I have to charge whenever possible or I will run the thing out. Not a major pain so I can deal with it but would rather have it improve.
On the other hand, call failure at the rate I am experiencing is unacceptable.
Funny thing, my iPhone also discharged rapidly today after I upgrade to 3.1.3. It went down to 12%. During that period I also had a high rate of call failure and had problems connecting to the service provider. When I got home I plugged it in and it immediately flashed up to 75% and then charged normally. Connection problems seem to have resolved themselves as well. So, now I am just waiting to see how it will do.
Interesting. My battery was down to 86% and I reset network settings and the battery indicator went back up to 95% after the iPhone did the restart thing...
I've had to charge my phone a lot since I got it- but I work it hard too... so I have to charge it at least once a day, and halfway through the day on a reasonably busy day...
I am having similar problems as people are describing in this thread, though I don't know if the problem is the battery or just the battery level reading that 3.1.3 was supposed to improve.
Since updating, I've had a couple of experiences along these lines: after a typical weekday of use (basically iPod and 3G internet on my commutes of 35-40 minutes to and from work, with maybe a few minutes here and there throughout the day), my battery used to read somewhere in the mid 70%s range. The other night, I got home, ate dinner, picked up the phone and the battery read 30%. While I was looking at the number trying to think of why it was so low, it jumped to 49% - lower than I expected, but not out of the question.
I set it down again. A couple of hours later, I picked it up again, and it was telling me that the battery was dead and I needed to charge it. I tried to wake it a couple of more times and got the same thing. THEN, I tried again and it started up with the battery reading 30% or so. Again, while I was watching it, it jumped up to 45% or so.
This sort of thing has been happening since the update. Is there a way to go back a version?
Following your logic in that you believe this is more than likely a hardware issue and occurred after upgrading to 3.1.3 then surely upgrading the software created the hardware error!!
I have lost the ability to connect to wifi since upgrading to 3.1.3. I have tried everything being suggested on Apple's support pages, which I suggest are lame attempts at resolving what is clearly a problem created by 3.1.3. I have never had a problem with my iphone before and would go as far as say it has been the perfect companion up until now.
Coincidence is the noteworthy alignment of two or more events or circumstances without obvious causal connection!!!
Apple's lack of response to this is in itself an admission of something being wrong with various iphone which must share similar idiosyncrasies.
