Hi anso73,

Welcome to Apple Discussions. It looks like your question would be better served via Netgear's support website. Here's some handy links -

http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2334 (Website for the specific router)

ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/DGN2000SM20May08.pdf (Website for the online version of the manual)

According to the manual, how to configure the router with Mac OS X can be found on Page 11.

Do you have a separate modem from your ISP or are you planning to use the Netgear as router and modem?

According to the website JasonFear linked, the device you picked will be both modem AND router.

If you look at the connections on the back of the device, one of them will be labeled "Internet" or something similar--a cord from your phone jack goes there. It looks like the device then has 4 Ethernet connections--one of those goes to your computer.

Hm, but I am not connecting through phone, I am connecting straight from the internet "plug" in the wall. (sorry, bad english here...). So what I did was that I used one of the four between wall and router, and one of the other 4 between router and laptop. But how do I then get to configure the wireless connection? I guess I should contact Netgear for assistance, since the loginpage they refer to does not pop up when i go to their registration site.

Okay, we've got some terms getting mixed up here.

Take the plug from your wall & place it into the 1 slot on the far left on your router. (One of those slots should be facing the opposite direction of the other 4--that's where the plug from your wall goes. It should also be a different color; looks like white in the manual.) Then, pick one of the other 4 slots (these should be outlined in yellow, if the manual is accurate) & use it to connect your computer to the router. That should get the login page to show up for you.

Okay, that plugs in directly into your computer and you are able to get internet. Right?
Then that cable is already attached to a modem of some kind. Do you know if there is one in
your building? I think you need to use your incoming connection as the input. The RJ45 connector coming from the wall will be the input to the router. Then take another RJ45 cable from one of the output connectors to your computer.

You most likely can disable the gateway component of the modem and just have it operate as a "passthru" or bridge mode. Although that's extra work and honestly, probably outside of what I'd consider a usual setup. Ideally, as Lyssa stated, a stand alone router (like an AirPort Extreme/Express) would much better serve your needs and be much more "plug and play."
