Question - for those with battery problems after 3.1.3 (like me) are you getting email via exchange?

    Using the GMAIL Account option.

Something is very off with the 3.1.3 firmware. In addition to the fluctuating battery percentage when turning on the phone, I'm noticing higher than normal battery drain.

I have push (Yahoo Mail), hourly fetch (Yahoo Calendar), 3G and WiFi on. Bluetooth is off. The phone is not jail-broken or anything like that. I used to turn my phone off every night, but lately I've been simply putting it on vibrate and locking the screen. Under 3.1.2, the battery normally went down about 3 to 5 percentage points after about 8 hours. This makes sense since the phone gets 300 hours of standby on a full charge so it should lose 1% every 3 hours with everything turned off.

Last night I locked my phone as normal. After 6 hours it went from 35% to 25% for a drop of 10%. In that time I got 6 emails. The phone was on WiFi at the time so I checked my router logs and there was no excessive network activity. I drove to work and by the time I got there it was down to 12% and within 2 hours the battery was dead and the phone shut off.

I have the System Monitor app and the phone isn't using any more CPU than normal (though I do see securityd stopping and starting a lot).

I just power-cycled the battery from 0% to 100% (with the a/c icon). I then turned off the phone and turned it back on (while still plugged in) and the icon displayed 95% and charging for a few seconds before switching back to 100% a/c. The phones only a few months old so the battery is almost brand new. There's obviously something weird going on with 3.1.3's battery management.

Another thing I'm seeing is that the phone frequently hangs during shutdown so instead of shutting down after the spinning icon screen, the passcode prompt screen displays again and then the phone shuts down about 5 seconds later. This used to happen occasionally in 3.1.2, but now it happens almost every time I shut down the phone (unless the phone was just turned on).

Is anyone else with battery issues also having shutdown issues? I'm thinking that they might be related.

I would not worry about the battery going down slightly and then up when you turn it on. Drain could be causing capacitors to discharge and then charge again, who knows.

The shutdown deal occurred sometimes for me even under 3.1.2, when the 3G signal was weak. It would go to the wallpaper screen then turn off and when I turned it back again all usage was lost. I have seen this in 3.1.3 a few times, no change there. Sometimes it works sometimes not.

The 300 hours is only if you have everything turned off. Your 10% drop in 6 hours, or 60 hours like that for full to zero battery, is reasonable.

Do folks with these issues *really* need push? Can't you just check email by opening it up? Push is a known battery killer.

My reply is yes to your push question - I need it.

Push is a battery killer. I think those who run push know this and are willing to accept it. But on order of a day or "normal" usage, not hours. Push is not the answer to this problem unless they changed something specifically related to push in 3.1.3. Push in 3.1.2 worked fine without draining battery.

I DO NOT have a battery problem after 3.1.3 and I use Exchange with Push. My battery life is better with 3.1.3 than it has been with any previous release.

Well that is good to know - then it seems like we can rule out push as a culprit.

thank you for such a great and helpful answer to my problem, it doesn't bother me that much as it doesn't jump during the day it's only when i turn the iphone on that it happens. thank you again

i agree about push, i have never used push it is a known battery killer,i have it on fetch every hour that's enough for me..push is pointless i think

You cannot rule out anything. Who knows what push does with different apps, for example Facebook.

yes i am having the same shut down problems, it happened all the time on 3.1.2 then it stopped for abit on 3.1.3 then started up again, i have tried everything even restoring to a new iphone, it didn't help, you are the only other person to say they are having the same problem, its such a pain as it ruins my usage and standby times, as its rebooting itself..and i get % jump when i turn on iphone..very annoying firmware

Push is useless *for you*. If you run a time sensitive business where you are not in one place at a time, push becomes more critical. Not everyone uses the iPhone for personal use.

So the alternative: check mail every few minutes which will result in absolutely no difference in performance comparatively.

It would be nice to abandon the slaying of push as a battery killer and get back on topic about what might be the root cause of the 3.1.3 problems.

I should note when I refer to push - I mean specifically push for e-mail - not for apps. I've gone through to make sure all the apps that support push have that turned off - but also I should note I've run this firmware with no apps and it's the same problem.

oh i agree certain people need push, i didn't mean it's useless for everyone, my apologies mate.
