How can I connect via FW

As an Poweruser I need Firewire, why is it not supported? What should I do with a Video-iPod without Firewire? Is the recent evolution made foir Kindergardens?

Hello,

My family has a powermac G4, 2 i books, and one powerbook G4 titanium

None of them have usb 2.0 because it took Apple 2 years to go from USB 1.1 to USB 2.0.

What can I do to use Firewire with the iPod Video that i just bought?

Who is the genius who favored a technology that most mac users who own computers for more than a year or two do not possess on their machines?

I am very disappointed and anxious to find a solution that does not involve having to buy a new computer.

Please help me.

I have enough music to completely fill several ipods, but I expected to be able to upload and erase my music as often and as fast as I did in the past.

Apple has been boasting about firewire technology (and it's been great - though a bit more expensive) for years but now turns its back on it, and on the people who have been buying into it.

I did not even check the specs of the new iPods... I was certain that Firewire was going to be there.

I am very disappointed by this latest experience.

I am gonna have to return this deffective product!

And... dare I say it... I might even buy a PC as my next computer... that thought is heresy... yet it's been creeping in more times than I would like to admit it... It's taken twenty years to get me there, but I am at the edge... and I might jump...

Apple turned its back on me... after 20+ years of loyalty and devotion...

Ah!... the agony

it's so sad... : (

Nothing.

Apple sells far more iPods to Windows users who do not have FireWire.

Bummer.

How is it defective?

Why not buy a $20 USB 2/FireWire card?

And... dare I say it... I might even buy a PC as my next computer.
What are you gonna do when it doesn't have FireWire?

Isn't it sad when Apple cares more about the Windows users than the Mac users?

I have bought well over $20,000 worth of Apple computers (not counting the iPods) over the years. (How many iPods does that equate to? 50+?)

I bought my wife the first generation iPod, during the first month of sales, (pre iPod/Apple Store Fad)..

my family also owns 2 2nd Generation iPods, and 1 3G iPod

I have offered as presents:
-the first iPod for windows ... before it became cool... I guess that mac users are the best Apple salesmen

-and 6 other iPods to friends and family

I did not even check the specs of the new iPods...
I was certain that Firewire was going to be
there.

Bummer.

Yes it's very sad, (isn't it?) when a computer company turns it back on about 80+% of its customer computer base... (i would venture to guess that most mac users fall into the category of people who have not bought a mac in the past two years).

A customer base that spends far more on Apple products than Windows users do.

I am gonna have to return this deffective
product!

All my friends listened to my advice and bought macs... but none of them own one with USB 2.0...

I can't buy them the new iPod for the Holidays...

So it's a bad product in my books!

One with a deffect!

This thread suggests that they do not work.
And... dare I say it... I might even buy a PC as

Precisely... exactly... how right you are Sir... but it will have USB 2.0... Right?

And, apparently, Apple will finally care about me then...

Cause I have been pushing their products for decades through the good years, and through the bad years.

Cause I feel cheatted by their new product, one that is clearly intended for a PC market as opposed to a Mac one.

I can tell you from personal experience that a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card will work with a Titanium Powerbook so not sure why it wouldn't work with a newer model.

I don't think it's a Mac versus PC market thing, it's an old computer versus new computer thing. It just so happens that since Intel was pushing USB, USB 2.0 has been on PC motherboards for a loong time. Just like there are people that see the Mac as an attractive alternative, there are Mac users that will see the PC as an attractive alternative. As long as you have a well thought out transition plan, you may be wondering why you ever used Macs in the first place!

Gotta keep it alive. Gotta ge a 3rd party solution to this. Maybe a FW / USB bridge? Some kind of external removable box / connector. Can't someone come up with a solution to this.

No Don't lock this thread ... keep it alive. Such a great product with such a glaring omission making a lot of people reconsider the item. I use ipods to move large files between studios but USB 1.1 aint gonna cut it in a busy studio environment. Back to G4 for me ... dang.

Sounds like PC user used to accepting the crap dished out to them by Microsoft.

The reason people are ranting is because they are used to high quality pro output from Mac. This is a huge step backwards..I am feeling it already having owned a 5GB, 20GB, the iPhoto 60GB and now the ViPod 60GB. The reason people are ticked is because people are using their Pods for more than just music. I use it as an external hard drive to back up video editing, sound and graphic design work at the office. You can install OS X on it and boot up to do diagnostics or defrags with an iPod. Waiting for 25GB of data to back up takes a friggin long time. BUT since we have now moved into the "Video" generation (ie. transferring 500 MB files versus a 3mb song) ..Firewire at the fastest speed was imperative! That's why the the rants.

Ok..so you save a few mm in thickness..who cares..bring back the firewire!!!
Small is not always better. Things can only get so small in the physical 3 Dimensional world we operate in. Note: They did move to a "larger" screen!!!

Have the PC users get with it and get a firewire card, adapter or something..they are used to having to "build" and customize their machines and deal with the incompatibilites anyway. Mac users expect it to work and expect the best! So when Apple cowtows to a lower standard..it's not good.

It's a very different culture. It's called demand for quality..it's what we pay for.

My boyfriend switched to Macs 3 years ago. He was determined recently to buy a cheap PC to run ONE piece of audio software. He owned a copy of this program and Winblows wouldn't allow you to install it. We had to install about 5 things before it would allow us and even then..we never could get it to work. He tossed it the next day. He says never again will he work with a PC. If he has to waste an entire evening solving incompatibility issues..it's not worth a dime! I think in the past 15 years..I have spent maybe 30 min with Apple tech support. Not a bad run for PowerPC 6100, to G3 to G4 Cube to eMac and a G5 dual (G4 iBook) each having lifespans of 4 years+. The oldest unit I have is Macintosh Plus from 1986..STILL WORKING!

And on an ending note..you will always have people say.."I love my Mac"..but you have never heard anyone say.."Oh, I love my Windows".

Welcome to the discussions, Ainslie.

Gotta keep it alive? For what purpose? We can be assured that

a) Apple won't get the "message" through these forums, that's what the feedback email address is for.

b) There are new threads created often with the same information, so you don't have to worry about potential users not getting the "message".

c) Since this is an Apple forum, you're not communicating directly with the 3rd party vendors (Griffin, Belkin, etc.) that MIGHT want to consider such a device so they're [i[not getting the "message"

This isn't a matter of a firmware upgrade, THIS generation iPod lacks the hardware for a Firewire connection. If you want this capability added to the NEXT generation iPod, then send feedback and avoid this version at all costs!

Why not do it while you sleep?

...That meant that syncing was mega
fast.

Hey, i've been sleeping since about 1130am here in miami, with my new ipod video "syncing". it skipped about 3/4 of the videos in my collection and was/is STILL updating when i woke up about an hour ago (330pm). rediculously slow on my eMac. and my computer will be only two years old--next summer. no excuse for this sorry performance. firewire was megafreakinfast by comparison. i should have gotten a psp.

...then loyalty goes out the window. I
was going to buy a new powerbook in the spring - I
think that's not going to happen now.

yeah, same here. seriously, this is some bullsh*t.

comes to replacing the mac.... Windows Media Centre
Edition does look rather nice..... 🙂

whoa whoa whoa, you're fricken crazy, d00d. and you obviously havn't learned a thing. but it does mean that i'm gonna have to learn linux now. (sigh) well, it was inevitable.

I readed all the post here and all I got to say is WOW. I have been a Mac user since 1984. : ) For Christmas I got two things that I wanted, a iPod 5 and a new computer desk. The computer desk came with a built in USB 2 hub which I have hooked up to my Summer of 2000 iMac G3 Snow 500MHz and iPod 5. Yes the transfer of videos and music is bit slower then firewire but it is not that much of a big deal. It's taking me about 10 to 20 more seconds per. song to load on my iPod, but my iMac is 5 1/2 years old. But that is not why I'm writing. My question is how many have tried using a USB 2 hub? How is it working for you? Thanks.
