Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

milliGauss readings? Electromagnetic Emissions

Has anybody compiled any milliGauss emissions (chart) anywhere for either the desktop or portable Macs down through the years?

I'm coming up empty, except for some stuff Charles Moore published in 2008 with specifics to iPhones.

A couple things for your consideration:

1) There are hundreds (probably thousands) of electrical and mechanical engineers working at Apple that know a heck of a lot more about EMR than you or I do. Add those to the thousands upon thousands (millions!?) of electrical engineers working on all the electric products that we use daily. Do any of these well-educated people have any concerns about EMR? No, it doesn't seem that they do.

2) It's been more or less scientifically proven that there are no adverse effects produced by the electromagnetic radiation put out by consumer devices. This probably explains #1.

It is not at all surprising that you detected EMR coming from the Airport Express. That is exactly how WiFi works. And OTA TV transmissions. And radio.

I'm only asking for hard data. Any Apple Engineers involved in EMI/RFI shielding and EMR and reading this forum, please step forward. ;^)

I happen to know from my research and investigation that indeed, consumer electronics have been and continue to be detrimental to the health of many people who suffer from EMS. Sweden recognizes EMS as a disability. Other European countries are recognizing it as such as well. Insurance companies in Europe actually pay for putting those folks in EMF/EMI free zones.

I'm sorry, but you're likely to be disappointed. Even if Apple engineers read this forum (there is no evidence that they do) then they would likely be precluded from commenting due to NDAs that they signed upon commencement of employment. If Apple does have this data, I doubt it will ever be made public.

I just find it hard to believe that there is actually an impact. People live under power lines and I can imagine that they emit multiples more EMR than any consumer device could be. I suppose you can label me a skeptic based on the scientific consensus. I will be interested in your report though and any data you may come up with.

Since I have not signed any such NDAs, I/we will collect the data and make my/our findings known in March in my/our magazine.

If this thread get closed prematurely, you will know why. Where there is smoke, there is usually some smoldering going on and a little breeze can turn it into a raging inferno.

Frankly, I was amazed at finding just how electronically noisy my MBP is. I'd like to know why and what I personally can do to mitigate that, since I spend an incredible amount of time with it and I do get migraines and blurred vision and am beginning to show other physiological symptoms related to "breathing in too much electrosmog".

If you read anything on the Product Feedback page, you know you shouldn't expect a response to your feedback.

If you read the terms of service you agreed to when you signed up to post here, you know that Apple hosts this forum system so users of Apple products can help each other with technical issues in it, NOT so users can communicate with Apple through it. By using Product Feedback, you have now communicated your concerns to Apple. Apple will respond or not, as it chooses. It is under no obligation to do so, and rarely does.

Here's what you can do: sell your MBP and buy another computer that's more to your liking. Surely your health is more important to you than owning a Mac.

NOT gonna happen! There are ways and methods to reduce emissions and we will present those in March. First we have to know just how strong the emissions are and where they are coming from so we can take appropriate action to reduce exposure to the electrosmog. It is really simple to do once we identify both the frequencies and the sources of the electromagnetism.

"Nobody is forthcoming with a chart or graph of EMF/EMI emissions from Macs."

Everyone needs something to affirm their lives, and I guess we know what you are doing to affirm yours. Since you choose to ignore posts, it is difficult to provide you with the information that you want. Petulance does not end at childhood, obviously.

Apple's hardware does not exceed the FCC Class B emissions standard, and the standard is on the internet. It is just that simple.

Hi pritchet1,

I said early in this thread that I thought the issue was interesting and that it would be good to see some figures, but I'm afraid your posts are beginning to look rather more like a crusade as time goes on.

You said at the beginning of the thread that you didn't believe that you suffered from electromagnetic sensitivity, but now you seem to be saying that you think you do. I'm not sure who you mean when you talk about 'we will present" etc in your last post, but the longer the thread goes the more you are coming across as part of an organised lobby group with a specific axe to grind rather than an interested observer.

The communications issues with Apple that you raise aren't really matters that can be addressed here. You need to take them up directly with Apple. This place really is not an effective "conduit" for such things. As you say you have a media interest in the matter you would be much better off going through the Apple Public Relations channels, which you can access through http://www.apple.com/contact/

Enough said here, I think. You aren't going to get the answers you want here because they simply can't be provided by anyone in this sort of forum, and what we are increasingly seeing seems to be proselytising rather than information seeking anyway.

Cheers

Rod

So the original question has been answered with "No". That is not the answer I seek. I have to go do the research myself. I do not like reinventing the wheel, especially if the work has already been done. Apparently it has not been done.

"We" (macCompanion magazine) will publish our findings.

Regarding the MagSafe 3-prong; Thanks to you, I was able to locate mine. I'd forgotten I even had it (I had to do some digging). Thank you!

Now I can check to see if using a grounded power adapter is going to make an electronic noise difference vs. the "duck bill" 2-prong connector. I appreciate your help in bring this to my attention.

Hi pritchet1,

Firstly, I do find this topic interesting. But I'm quite skeptical.

I've just spent four years studying cell and molecular biology. Do you have any scholarly works saved by any chance that clearly illustrate the effects of EMF at the cellular level? If you do, I would be quite interested in reading through them. I would do the lit search myself but it is quite time-consuming to do correctly. So I wanted to see if you had done it first.

It is obvious to me that these studies (that explain precisely +why and how+ EMF is potentially causing the symptoms you describe) are crucial to your writings as well. It is all well and good to obtain the milliGauss data from around the computer, but you must also know the baseline at which cellular damage occurs so that you can compare your data to it. I think these values should come from the peer-reviewed literature for your study to be seen as legitimate.

I look forward to reading the papers! Thanks!

I've reviewed one book - but you need Stanza to be able to read it on a Mac. I happen to have a PDF version of the book - "The Invisible Threat III: The Risks Associated With EMFs & Effective Interventions" by Dr, Howard W. Fisher. I can also point you towards another source that lists 3 other books - it is a 28-page PDF - http://www.rewire.me

Me, I just want an EMF/EMI baseline to work from with Apple products. It can't be that hard to gather, right? My intent is to perhaps show that Apple engineering has indeed thought about the electromagnetic and RF emissions issues and dealt strongly with them. I just do not know at the moment.

Today, I discovered the FCC ID trail - http://www/fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid/

However, the BRC series (MacBooks) seem to be missing in action. I have not found them yet anyway. ;^)

BTW, do you know how far away the iPhone is supposed to be from your body in order for us to use it within the safety limits of the SAR? 5/8ths of an inch. It is in the User Guide. Ever read it? I didn't.
