I am late to this Discussion, Travis, but you may find MIT's research _+On the Effectiveness of Aluminium Foil Helmets: An Empirical Study+_ interesting.

As always Ronda, the most important statement lies in the conclusions!

"It requires no stretch of the imagination to conclude that the current helmet craze is likely to have been propagated by the Government, possibly with the involvement of the FCC."

I remember a comedian talking about annoying plane passengers who never stop talking. He mentioned that he always carried around some aluminum foil for just those occasions. He'd take the foil, wrap it around his head, and then say, "It prevents the CIA from reading my mind." The kicker: after he did that, the passengers wouldn't say another word.

"We hope this report will encourage the paranoid community to develop improved helmet designs to avoid falling prey to these shortcomings."

Lead foil, maybe? But that could have its own dangers, I would think.
