Panasonic GF1 RAW missing from Aperture 3

I see there are a few cameras missing from Aperture 3 that has been in LR for a while now, like Panasonic GF1, Olympus PEN, Leica M9. Hopefully a new RAW update comes soon.

But, since the GF1 one is very simialr to G1 and GH1, I wonder why they didn't just include it...

Malcolm ... This is why I worry about an Aperture 3 future.

I'm pretty sure that, in time, Apple will fix the problems with A3. And it looks like we will get (finally) GF1 support.

However, I'm probably not alone in thinking ... when will we have to go through this again?

Many of us change cameras frequently. With Pany announcing new models shortly, how long will we have to wait for RAW updates on those? Months? Or maybe never?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Adobe doesn't announce proactively that they're releasing RAW updates. But at least they have a history of supporting a broad range of cameras and the updates seem to come quickly.

The secrecy from Apple is making me seriously consider LR.

I order to avoid changes in the complete photo library I have patched the executable file:

../Contents/MacOS/RawCamera

simply replace the string DMC-GH1 by DMC-GF1. I did it with sed:

sed 's/DMC-GH1/DMC-GF1/' RawCamera > RawCamera.Updated
cp RawCamera RawCamera.Original
cp RawCamera.Updated RawCamera

su or root access rights are reqired to do this.

When you do this you can use the GF1 raw files directly. If it doesn't work or you have problems simply reinstall Apple's raw update 3.0.

Now I can import directly from the camera. Works without problems.

Can anyone report on how RAW conversions compare between this and LR?

I did a test with a friends' GF1 (he was a happy man today). There is not that much of a difference, but LR's rendering is a bit oversaturated and oversharpened to my test. I always liked AP's more neutral render than ACR's. I feel it to be closer to what the camera caught.

But that's me, and LR overprocessing is easily manageable. AP and LR have very good raw engines and, IMO, the more consistent ones. Images processed with these programes will be between good and perfect, whereas Bibble and CaptureOne produced (for me at least) images that went from horrible to perfect (Capture One acts strangely with some Canon cameras). That's why these are the programs I recommend.
