Text and formula in the same cell

In your case: Total amount of lemmings: "=sum(cell whatever to whetever)", you can use the expression...

="Total amount of lemmings: " & SUM(range)

The "&" is the concatenation operator and its purpose is to combine different calculations and text into a string.

Not exactly.

SUM requires a list of cells references or a range of cells.

So, if you want to sum cells of a column, you may name de column "cells to sum in cell xx"
and insert in cell xx the formula :
=SUM(cells to sum in cell xx)

Reading carefully *Numbers User Guide* and *iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide* would not hurt lemmings 😉
