Can't shoot tethered with a Canon 7D

Actually, I just tried this, and it worked fine for me. I saw the image on the screen in live mode, it's pretty cool. The only 'caveat' was in order to see anything on the laptop screen I had to press the shutter button half way down. Otherwise that screen was black.

I don't know if that's intentional or what.
Camera has firmware v.1.1.0.

I'm experiencing the same problem as Md Welch. Tethered shooting works fine using EOS Utility.



Running Aperture 3.0, OS 10.6.2 and firmware 1.1.0

10.6.2. Yes, there was a CF card in the Camera.

That said, I installed Aperture 3trial on my home machine (Mac Pro tower, 10.6.2). I cannot get it to work.

So I'd say something's going on and it ain't good. I wish this would work... sigh.

I'll try it again on the laptop at work to see I can get it work like I thought it did earlier today. To be honest, I'm not feeling all that hopeful.

Same issue with 5D MkII.

The 7D is not listed. If you'll note, no recent Canon cameras are listed. This is because the Canon cameras used to support a standard tethering protocol, and they have removed this support. Apple implements the standard protocol, but does not have code to handle the new, proprietary Canon protocols. As such, you're unfortunately out of luck and will have to tether using Canon's software and then use a hot folder to auto-import to Aperture (you can do this easily, with scripts and with Automator, and it is in the documentation).

It's unfortunate that Canon removed this support, and unfortunate that Apple didn't have the resources (or maybe the information from Canon? I don't know) to do this, but that's what you have for now.

canon changed the protocol 2? 3? years ago...i am tired of hearing that canon uses a "new" protocol....C1 can shoot tethered with the 5DII...so can other smaller software solutions....there is no reason for apple to not offer this with aperture 3....
the apple script offered is not a good solution...automator can help out....
but really:would it be so hard for apple to at least offer something like a watched folder option...within aperture?

I have the 5d MarkII as well. No joy here.

Tethering works fine with 3rd party software Capture1 and even a the DSLR remote for iphone by OnOne but not Aperture.
Why can't you sit down with Canon and work this out. I purchased the upgrade online without even using it expecting that this feature would be fixed. I would have been happy if that was the only improvement in A3.
I have tried working with watched folders and scripts etc, and found them to be a bit buggy.
When you are in the studio, with everything happening, clients onsite to see your shots being taken and giving art direction to the shoot, the last thing you need is to have multiple parts that can fail, and then have to start up, the canon utility again, then check the watched folder is working etc etc.

It is not good enough Apple. If smaller companies can implement 3rd party support for a Pro camera, then surely Apple can too...?!??
I will continue to use the Canon software which I hate. Fingers crossed for Aperture 4...

What a farce, Apeture 3 is turning out to be! I've just tried tethering my 7D and discovered that it's not supported, whereas Apple are happy to support such cameras as EOS Digital Rebel and Kiss Digital not to mention a range of other sub-professional cameras. I thought Aperture was supposed to be professional software yet it doesn't even support EOS 5D mk II, which is now one of the most widely used professional cameras of choice.

This is just one more disappointment to add to an increasingly long list of difficulties. It all adds up to moving away from Apple solutions for professionals. It's back to Adobe Light Room and EOS Utility for me.

I just installed Lightroom beta 3 .... and tethering worked. Too bad that a beta software distribution wins over Aperture... I can't get used to the lightroom interface, so please apple get this working inside aperture. It's hard to understand that Aperture 2 with my Canon 350D can tether, but my 7D with Aperture 3 won't.

BTW Live mode tethering isn't working in Lightroom, just the push-a-button-and-watch-the-result-on-a-big-screen mode.

I have to agree. I was very disappointed to find out the 3.0 cannot tether with my new 7D. My old 20D tethers fine. So much for progress.

There are many apps that can tether with Cannon Camera, so it's not rocket science, just laziness on Apples part, and that make me sad.

I am also joining the club of being disappointed. Tried to tether the Canon 7D with Aperture 3 with no luck. Found out it is not compatible at the present time. Down loaded the trail version of the new Adobe Lightroom 3 and tether worked like a charm with the Canon 7D.
