Centering a Table in Pages '09

My document has a small table in the middle of text. The table (the whole thing, not just the cell text) is against the left margin but I want it centered. The Inspector > Metrics has the X and Y grayed out. How can I center the table? Thanks from a Pages newbie.

The table is an inline object.

First so you can see what you are doing:

+Menu > View > Show Invisibles+

There is a paragraph return just below the table, click to the left of it and drag up and through the line the table is on. You will see the selection as a large area of blue to the right and under the table.

Now click on the centre button on the toolbar or +command shift |+ (just under the delete key).

The table will centre.

btw to get first line indents, don't use tabs.

+Menu > View > Show Ruler+

Drag the flat bar at the left margin to the right. This sets the first line indent.

Hi Dr. Dave

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

Objects can be two sorts.

Floating which means they can be freely moved anywhere, but can be disassociated from their text.

In-line which means it is part of the text flow and acts like a rather big letter in the text.

Your table is, I believe, In-line so can be treated like any other text.

If it is on its own line you can choose to centre the text (see Toolbar icons) and the table will be centred.

If it has other text on the same line it can be positioned with tabs and the ruler.

Or you can go:

+Inspector > Wrap > Floating+

Just make sure you have adjusted the word wrap around your object.

You have to select the table so you see the small squares. Click once on the table. Then use the Wrap Inspector palette as told earlier.

I don't think the first suggestion Peter wrote is good as the whole paragraph will be centered. You can make the table its own paragraph by inserting a paragraph break just in front and just after the table.

If your cursor is in the line, when you centre the text you centre everything including the inline objects, be it shape, table or textbox.

If something else is happening then you have to look at possible causes such as the object itself not fitting because something else is affecting it, like another floating object with wrap, which will push it away.

It maybe simpler if you click on my blue name and email me the file so I can see what is going on.
